If we can’t ask questions like that, drawn from the lived experiences of African people over the last several centuries, up to and through right now, doesn’t that make all this “teach and learn hard history” stuff pretty much performance theater?

I have so much information swirling around in my head, a guide/ list of 100 suggested books from you, I would appreciate! Social structure's suggestions, inferences have come from, are coming from, will always come from control, power, n white supremacy. Suggestions from you have come from, are coming from, n I truly believe, will always come from the love and liberation of Us as a people. Totally different! ❤❤❤

I was a youngster living on Ft Lee (1965) and Ft Bragg (1973 - 77). I remember wondering why they were named after "enemy" soldiers. I know African American former soldiers who say they will always refer to the posts by their old names. That's the power of indoctrination.

I am a regular listener. i would never comment ususally..... HOWEVER i figured my comment was somewhat relevant to part of the topic i am from Hampton, Virginia born and raised. I am a descendant of the Custis family. Its apparent my ancestors knew to the fullest extent what they did was wrong and immoral. Robert E Lee was above all else a hypocrite, always claiming one thing but doing the other. Lee also went to war against the union that his wife's (my 4th cousin 6 generations back) Grandpa had lead to help form, therefore Lee was ABSOLUTELY a traitor. Lee also apparently wrote that putting up the confederate statues were a bad idea in his letters to others. so its kinda ironic that the Daughters of the Confederate attempted to rewrite history in the way that their hero advised against. (Martha Washington's Son was my 2nd cousin 8 generations back.) George Washington while not leading the confederate army, He was no revered gentlemen. he owned hundreds of enslaved people some of whom were passed down to Lee. He was just as guilty as any other planter in the colonies. Our family like many other families has been bi-racial for centuries from both modern day consensual relationships and rape of enslaved. Some of those enslaved were my cousins. Many of the descendants of Martha Washington are black, white, and bi-racial! While history is very complex and i can sometimes feel inspired by a select few things my ancestors did, there is always a lot more to think about and truly break down. It's easy to get lost in the beauty of a plantation like my families ancestral homes. but every time i have ever visited these places it has never taken me long to go "that's some EVIL shit right there." and i find myself obsessing over learning and finding information about my black and bi racial cousins. so i would like to leave the viewers with one of them that i have been reading about recently. his name was William Costin 1780-1842 (Grandson to Martha Washington & my 3rd cousin 7 generations back) go read his Wikipedia page! And to answer Dr. Carr's question. "How am I supposed to look at George Washington any differently than any sane person would look at Hitler?" the answer is that George Washington was an opportunist. and so was Hitler. so id say its up to the viewer to decide. I would personally say there is very little difference for the most part.

Thank you for being among the very many who join us regularly to think together. And for taking this moment to join the ongoing conversation with your detailed comment. I hope everyone reads this. It is indeed up to each one of us to decide. The fact that you framed our choices with a lens crafted in our common humanity is an acknowledgement of that common humanity as well as the articulation of a common standard by which we can assess behavior that transcends time and space. Any possibility of dismantling oppressive hierarchies, making collective progress and engendering systemic, structural change has to begin with dialogue like this.
