Leonard Ravenhill said that preaching the Word must be from (preacher’s) heart to (listeners’) heart, spiritually. That is, not head to head (researched to stored intellectual bible knowledge that puffs up) nor ear to ear, in which case nothing is remembered.

Definitely not smug. Intense yes but what is wrong in being intense? It is not a sin to be intense and when he is speaking about the greatest matters of life and death it would be strange not to be intense.
