About GU Screenwriting Society:
Our society was formed in order to establish a creative community where people from all different skill-types, experience and knowledge levels can learn how to write a screenplay and then put their new knowledge into practice through group activities and workshops. Our aim is for all our members to grow and learn in collaboration with their fellow writers.
We meet on campus every Tuesday of the academic year. Our normal meetings usually involve a presentation by one of our committee members on some aspect of screenwriting or storytelling in general, whether that be format, structure, characterisation, dialogue etc., followed by a group activity designed specifically so that we can all hone in the skills or practices involved in the presentation. On top of that, we host fortnightly comedy writers rooms, where our members get to workshop and comedy sketch ideas and write short scripts, as well as fortnightly table read sessions, where our members get to have their scripts read out loud by other members and receive valuable and helpful feedback.
Additionally, we have various other types of events spread throughout the year, such as quizzes, screenings and socials, all revolving around films and TV series. Finally, we host special events, such as screenwriting competitions, film showcases, and our GUSS Yearly Awards, while we also take part in external film festivals like the 48 Hour Film Project, in which we won awards for Best Writing and Best Film in 2021, among others.
