In ‘crackdown’ after Haldwani demolition, 18-year-old with fractured skull

Haldwani’s Banbhoolpura remains tense with the imposition of a curfew and at least five deaths after violence following the demolition of an “illegal” mosque and madrasa on Thursday last week.
Roads leading to the locality are heavily barricaded and the area is being manned by over a 1,000 security personnel. The Pushkar Singh Dhami government has vowed strict action against “miscreants”. And the police have arrested 25 persons in three FIRs and claimed to have seized at least seven pistols as they try to nab those who they say clashed with security personnel last week.
Newslaundry met several locals from Banbhoolpura in Krishna Hospital, who accused the police of arbitrary action.
An 18-year-old, who has been diagnosed with a skull fracture, alleged that the police entered his house on Saturday and thrashed him with lathis. “They kept saying that I was pelting stones on February 8. I asked them how this was possible when I was at work? But they did not listen to me.”
He wasn’t the only one.

It was heart wrenching to go through this incident in our city, this was not Hindu vs Muslim, it was Encroachment vs Administration but it took an ugly turn. please enlighten us by telling us how it is encroachment vs administration? There was no order from any court of law permissing demolition of the Madrasa. The case was still being heard by the court. As per the law, even when demolishing encroached land that has been occupied for more than a given period, the govt has to provide alternatives to those dependent on that land. The police needs to act as per the law. If you are surrounded, then only you can act in self defense. If you know the accused is a culprit, catch them, put them in the court. But randomly going into houses and beating random people up isn't right. You may get a few criminals in the process but you lose the faith of the whole community and innocents are harmed.
