Today please come along with me to the Théodore Rousseau exhibition in Paris at the Petit Palais. As a member of the School of Barbican, he is not only one of the forerunners of the impressionists but is also one of the first European painters to create landscape paintings for the same of nature and not merely as a backdrop for historical or mythological scenes.
I will show you my favourite artworks from the exhibition and I will tell you more both about the art historical context as well as comment on the particularities of the different paintings and drawings giving you guys my personal in-depth analysis and art critique.

Thank you for this educational video. I'd never heard of this artist until now. I love the natural look of oil paintings, and I'd love to give it a try but I'm intimidated by painting in oils.

I'm glad I was able to help you discover a new artist David! I've only ever seen a couple of his paintings that are usually exhibited at the Musée d'Orsay so it was quite the discovery for me as well :) You should definitely try it - with the transparent quality to them as well as the longer drying time you can modify so much of what you do, should you be unhappy with the results. On the contrary, I feel like oil paints are quite forgiving and you don't necessarily have to restart from scratch if you don't like how everything turns out (cough cough watercolors cough cough)
