I’d l Iike to start by saying that I love your channel! I’m a little late getting into the world of astronomy.. as I just turned 54 years of age last month. I had been researching scopes, looking for “the best” overall instrument for my needs. This review helped me make up my mind.. Thanks for this review. I bought this telescope in November 2022, but I saw it during the Christmas holidays in November-December 2023. I'd advise checking Costco again during the Holiday season this year--they sometimes carry items like this seasonally. I just unboxed mine today (April 6 2024), and I don't see a red dot through Finderscope. I changed the battery but I still didn't see a red dot anywhere. Am I missing something? Finally, I'm a real "telescope newbie," so some things that might be "given" to others might not be obvious to me.

@@LearnToStargaze Good suggestion. It worked later on--after I'd already sent the comment above--but I may still upgrade. I suspect the wires weren't connecting to the battery and that moving the adjustment knobs made them work.

Sure, you could use this on an AZ-GTi, an Twilight I mount, a Celestron AVX, or an explore scientific iEXOS-100, anything with a vixen dovetail and enough capacity. @LearnToStargaze5 күн бұрын
Hard to say which one is better! They have the same primary lens. The mount on the Nat Geo is a bit sturdier, but the focuser is more adaptable on the Omni.
@MylesBabik5 күн бұрын
@@LearnToStargaze Hi John. Thank you for your quick reply. As I am only looking to use the telescope for the moon, Saturn and Jupiter for the most part, perhaps it is best to wait until both telescopes go on sale. The Nat. Geo. one is at Costco for $279 and the Celestron on Amazon for just under $300 but I noticed from your post that they have been on sale before. May I please ask another question? Whichever one I get, I was planning on buying a Celestron x-cel LX 7mm lens piece and an x-cell LX 2x barlow. With the barlow I am hoping to see the moon creators that much closer along with the red dot of Jupiter. Would you say the barlow would be helpful or would the objects lose some of their clarity? The barlow typically cost $160 so if it's not going to add much to the view, I would probably leave the barlow and just use the 7mm or maybe buy a 5mm instead? With the 7mm and barlow combined, that should take me to 188 times and I understand the max magnification for both telescopes is at arround 200. Thanks! Myles
@LindaC-7533 Жыл бұрын
very helpful, but the red dot finder is confusing. does it turn 'on' and 'off'? I see a small white dot and it clicks, when I turn the little knob, but I can't tell the difference it might be making. otherwise -- fabulous, down and dirty, primer on this telescope ! can you by the 2x Barlows anywhere (e.g. Amazon) -- and does that extend the length of the eyepiece as in the video - so that it's a little higher when looking through it?
@LearnToStargaze Жыл бұрын
The red dot finder produces a very bright red dot, if you don’t see it, either the battery is dead, or the little plastic battery protector is still in place. The on off knob also serves as a brightness knob, it’s best to turn down the brightness a bit. Yes, the amazon sybony Barlows seem to work fine.

Got one from Costco yesterday for $159. Last night, for first light, I saw Jupiter and the 4 moons. Very sharp, and I can make out the equatorial bands using the 10mm eyepiece. Makes me want to get a good 2x or 3x barlow. I'm wondering if a 3x barlow would be too much, even though with 3x you would still be under the 200x magnification.
@LearnToStargaze2 жыл бұрын
That would probably work. A high quality eyepiece like the 5mm X-Cel (by celestron) would also go a long way to improving the view. You can also add a blue filter for extra detail on the surface of Jupiter.

I am a beginner and was a little skeptical at first to buy a budget refractor, since my initial research had driven me towards a Reflector for this price range. However, I'm glad I found your video and I'm very pleased with my purchase. I was able to get pleasing views of Jupiter and Saturn on the first night (with the included eyepieces - hoping to have even better experience once the upgraded eyepiece arrives). The Mars looked very small, and perhaps Pleiades would require a broader field of view. I should be able to look at Moon tonight, once the filter arrives. Great review. Thanks for posting. I purchased 2x barlow lens to go with this telescope. I have read that putting the barlow lens between a reflector telescope and the diagonal increases the barlow power by 50%. Thus a 2x barlow lens between the telescope and the diagonal would provide 3x increase in magnification. Would this work for the Celeste Omnni AZ 102?
@LearnToStargaze Жыл бұрын
Not sure I follow your math. But yes, you could use a barlow (or simply a high powered eyepiece to help with the view of Jupiter, Saturn and the Moon (I wouldn’t use the Barlow for anything else). You can “zoom in” but the resolution stays the same.
@bdib Жыл бұрын
@@LearnToStargaze Thanks for responding so quickly! My question was concerning if you get more/less magnification depending on "where" you place the barlow lens. I typically put my barlow lens between the eye piece and the 90 degree diagonal. That is how I have seen you do it in your videos. However, some videos/articles by others suggest putting the barlow lens between the telescope tube and the 90 degree diagonal to get 50% more magnification. I tried putting it there but can't seem to focus the image. I didn't know if I was doing something wrong, if the Omni AZ 102 can't do that, or if the videos/articles by others were incorrect.
@LearnToStargaze Жыл бұрын
@@bdib It depends on the telescope design, particularly. the position of the focal point, and the range of the focuser. Sometimes the barlow will only work between the diagonal and the telescope, and sometimes it will only work between the eyepiece and the diagonal. A 2x barlow should double the telescope's focal length, regardless of where you place it.

Hi! Congrats on the new telescope! A hundred feet or so should be enough to achieve focus and align the finder to the telescope. Temperature does not affect this process. You’ll need to refocus the telescope every time you set it up and every time you switch eyepieces. Good luck with the scope!
@johnrobison14132 жыл бұрын
I bought this at Costco here in the US for $200. My impressions about the scope has been a mixed bag, some good, some not so good. Item 1, the alt/az mount. Mine came locked up tight in altitude. Trying to contact Celestron for technical advice was impossible, left on hold for over one hour and then dropped and finally the ‘leave a call back phone number’ feature of their automated call center instead dropped my call. They did finally respond to a email. Adjusting the center nut on the fork did loosen the altitude but getting it set to just the right tension has been frustrating to say the least. The slow motion in altitude simply doesn’t work, no manner what adjustments I make on that nut. Item #2, the red dot finder is so mis-aligned that even with adjustments at full limits it isn’t possible to get it right. Celestron wants me to jump through so many complicated hoops for warranty service that their ‘warranty’ is essentially worthless! You are on your own. But, that said, I feel the scope was cheap enough that, with some work, I can get it operational. Oh yes, item #3, the attached dovetail is too short to adjust for balance if you plan to use the smart phone adapter. Sorry for the rant, but, well that is what my personal experience was.

What is a decent scope and motorized mount to see Rings of Saturn with?
@LearnToStargaze3 жыл бұрын
For a motorized mount, that depends on your budget. For $500 AZ-GTe with 102mm telescope, for $1000 Celestron Nexstar 6Se, for $2000 Celestron Evolution 8. Hope this helps!

I'm really looking hard at the Celestron NexStar 8SE. I know in this new world we are now living in I will have to pay a premium to get one. It scares me a little bit on getting it aligned, I realize patients and time are key. I just hope at first for the cost I am satisfied with just tracking and looking threw the lens before having to buy a lot of accessories. I do realize when I do purchase the telescope I will also have to purchase a power supply.

My Az 120 came with 10 and 20 mm lenses. My question is can it handle a 2x Barlow lens and whats the max magnification of different lenses for it? Kids love it!
@LearnToStargaze2 жыл бұрын
The calculations are in the video, but remember you generally want the least amount of magnification. Increasing magnification often decreases image quality and makes a telescope much harder to use. A 25mm plossel eyepiece is generally all you need for deep sky objects. Add a 2x Barlow for planets and the Moon.
@lornehiemstra18232 жыл бұрын
I removed the Diagonal on this scope to see if the image would be clearer as a sort of quality test of the Diagonal. So, with a straight through configuration with just a Celestron Omni 2x barlow and a Celestron Omni Plossl 32mm eyepiece I can't seem to get anything to come into focus. Is it because the the Optical length is not long enough with the diagonal removed? I tried other eyepieces as well, 12mm, 10mm and 20mm. I did turn the focus knob all the way in each direction.

If you remove the diagonal you need spacers to make up the difference.

I have a few of them “ hobby killer” scopes. With some simple upgrades. They are not bad for kids or the beginner astrophotographer .. throw out the stock tripod and go to good will and find a ok camera tripod. Huge difference.. then get some good eyepieces . And a cellphone camera. Even with a 50x 400 scope using 965 adapted to 1.25 I can get the Orion Nebula.. I’ve got pictures of andromeda using my great grandfathers 1950s Lafayette 60x800 refractor.. the scope is not the killer. It’s the mounts and eyepieces.

Hi John. Video topic idea for you. I own the Omni AZ 102 also and I'm very confused on 1.25" vs. 2" options. It would be great if you could do a video on 1.25" vs. 2". Advantages and disadvantages. Since I own the Omni AZ 102, I'm trying to figure out if I should upgrade to 2" since the Omni can accept it, but I can't figure out the advantages and disadvantages and whether or not I should upgrade. Thanks!
@LearnToStargaze Жыл бұрын
That’s really just a question of budget, and personal preference. I’m finishing up a premium eyepiece video, and all the eyepieces are 1.25. Some, like the Hyperion series, fit both sizes. If there is a 2 inch eyepiece you allready really love, then it’s worth an upgrade. Otherwise, might be better to just get a premium eyepiece like the Baader Hyperion 24mm.

Which is better this Celestron 102mm telescope or the Orion StarBlast 102mm altazimuth? Both are good for daytime / terrestrial viewing? Not sure if the Orion has an eyepiece to correct the mirrored image when viewing.
@LearnToStargaze Жыл бұрын
If I’m not mistaken it looks like they both come with a prism diagonal to correct for mirror reversal. I haven’t used the Orion 102, but based on several factors, it looks like the Omni 102 is better: longer focal length (less chromatic aberration), slow motion controls, two inch focusing assembly…

I went to Costco this morning and found it for $199. It was not online-in store only. I am amazed by how solid this build is, from the metal optical tube to the mount itself. We have already spent some quality family time outside enjoying incredible views of the moon and it’s only dusk! Anyhow, thank you again for this great video.
