Goes to show how much research Madonna did about Edward and Wallace. Edward was obsessed with Wallace but Wallace at times found Edward unbearable. She didn't want to marry Edward at all, she actually tried a few times to get rid of him. Wallace's true love was her second husband Ernest.

My grandmother was born in 1878, graduated from Radcliffe in 1900, worked at Miss Porters in Farmington and later Phillips Exeter Academy as a school librarian. So she moved in the same upper class circles as Wallis. She never met her personally but they had mutual acquaintances. And she told me, in a manner which made clear I must not ask for details, that "Wallis Simpson was not the sort of person that anybody would want marrying into their family." Years later I read a biography. She wasn't just a divorcee, she was a courtesan, basically a professional. She had been affiliated with a series of powerful, wealthy men.
@ailleananaithnid2566
@ailleananaithnid2566 Жыл бұрын
Except you can’t trust those biographies because they are dripping with misogyny. This was all Wallis Simpson’s fault and Edward VIII was an innocent little boy who could not run his own affairs? Come on! As a woman, Wallis was not the “kind” of woman you wanted in your family. Do you have any clue what that means? You don’t want sexually loose women in your family but that’s OK for men. He could have a dozen affairs but not Wallis. A woman who has sex outside of marriage is cheap & without virtue. That is what that person was telling you. But the double standard didn’t bother you in the least, did it? Back then the women were blamed for the men’s poor behavior & choices. These men were always victims of predatory women. Sorry, I don’t buy it. Edward was a serial cheater. He was in an affair with his third married woman when he met Wallis? What was he… 5 years old? Why was he NEVER responsible for his own behavior? The same for Diana Spencer. It was her fault that Charles was besotted by Camilla? The Windsor men are irresponsible and immature in their relationships. All they are required to do is find a spouse and pop out a few kids. That’s not exactly a tough assignment! What is the male equivalent of courtesan? There isn’t one bc the whole thing is sexist and archane.

I am glad for William that he was able to delay full blown royal duty for a time. He held down a real world job as most citizens must do as much as that is possible for a prince. Holding down a job is a necessary step on the road to maturity. I admire William and Catherine for their efforts to remain tethered to ways in which the "common" folk live. Normalcy and traditional values will help sustain their marriage.

He also used her as he never wanted to be king. He was a shallow frivolous man and hard work and responsibility were not part of his personality. He used Wallis ti get out of being king, and she never wanted to marry him in the first place but he trapped her. She desperately tried to talk him out of abdicating. She tried to run and get out of the marriage but there was nowhere for her to go. We have seen her letters to her ex husband whom she still loved and did for the rest of her life. Edward trapped Wallis and she knew she would have to sacrifice her whole life if she married him, and so it came to be. There are two sides to every story and Wallis was never happy in that marriage but put a good face on it.

Heard lots of people talking about potential royal marriages for Edward VIII and the other sons of George V. If he’d never met Wallis, and the rules hadn’t allowed Prince Henry and George VI to marry British aristocrats, then my picks for royal matches are as follows. 1. Edward VIII - Princess Katherine of Greece and Denmark - daughter of King Constantine I of Greece and Princess Sophia of Prussia 2. George VI - Princess Isabelle of Orléans - daughter of Prince Jean, Duke of Guise and Princess Isabelle of Orléans, a French match would have been good as it would have taken away from British royals only marrying Germans, and been popular after WW1 - Isabelle’s sisters had married Prince Christopher of Greece and the Duke of Aosta - Isabelle is also the same age as Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon 3. Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester - Princess Margaretha of Sweden - she married Prince Axel of Denmark in our time, but often her younger sisters are sited as matches but never her, her sisters became Queen of Belgium and Crown Princess of Norway. Perhaps she’s not chosen as her marriage was widely considered a love match. These matches are good as they’re not too closely related - none come from families with Haemophilia or blood diseases. They’re from neutral nations or British allies. And they’re not German!!!

@@trawlins396 --Supposedly, the Church of England disallows the remarriage of a Royal if his/her spouse is still living. Charles was married Camilla in a registry office while his second marriage was blessed in St. George's Chapel. In other words, the Queen allowed this remarriage on a technicality. Good or bad , right or wrong , marriage is a lottery . You either have a winning ticket or you don't. There is no telling until you have really lived with someone . It has worked out beautifully for Will and Kate . As far as Wallace Simpson is concerned she hit the jackpot with both Ernest Simpson and the abdicated King she finally married . They both loved her . It has recently been revealed from her letters during that period that her real love was in fact Ernest Simpson the man she divorced in order to marry Edward. I must say I have always felt very sorry for Edward the Eighth . After his marriage to Wallis Simpson she treated him appallingly and would often step out on him with other men while he just sat at home and waited for her . What a tragic and sad life he lived . Wallis may have been shunned by the Royals but she lived a very privileged life style and wanted for nothing , in addition to being loved and adored by both men even if she herself didn't really love the King . She really did fall into her own trap and that brought her a lot of unhappiness. However that doesn't alter the fact that with both marriage she snagged two doting men who couldn't do enough for her . From a secular perspective Wallis Simpson had won,....... big time .Getting one winning ticket in life is hard enough , she got two that landed in her hand . Many will argue that's no win , because she was sad and lonely, however that was not the fault of either Ernest Simpson or Edward the Eighth's. There was only one monolithic loser in all of this and that was the man that gave up a Throne for a happiness that he believed he had finally found ....... What a tragedy .....what a tale .

No I don't think it was ok at all that he was a nazi sympathizer. There's another doc FBI file that they spied on him and Ms Simon even before their relationship became known. He was passing state secret to the nazi and he was a loose tongue and she was having affair w/ prominent Nazi officer (Hitlers right hand man) besides the King. So they considered them liability They just using Ms Simon as an excused to get rid of him. It was believed that he was given two options. Give up the crown and go exile or hang for treason. I supposed to cover up the embarrassement.

I have seen that picture discussed before. I am sorry I cannot remember the source. As I recall, Edward was manoeuvred into that spot and he was actually waving a greeting. He did not give the Nazi salute. A few seconds farther on, a rumor is regurgitated about Edward and Jews and Reds. (For what it's worth, before the abdication, Wallis and Ernest were under surveillance and a report said they were Jews!) I do not believe the Royal Family is or has been anti-Semitic. England allowed a large immigration of East European Jews in the last decades of the 1800's. (When Oswald Mosley tried to start his own version of fascism in England, his black shirts paraded through the East End of London in Hope's of starting a riot among the immigrant Jews.) When Hitler was just starting out, he seemed to be doing great things. Time magazine named him Man of the Year back in the 30's. If Hitler had not started a terrible war and if he had not instituted genocide, he might be remembered favorably. Communism (Reds) may be a different matter, whether or not they were hated. Communism was introduced to the world by the murderous Bolsheviks who slaughtered Edward's aunts, uncles and cousins when they liquidated the tsar and his family. Societies and governments were wrestling with things we are still working out. Societies are no longer agrarian. There are huge populations in big cities. There is poverty, unemployment, slums and many more issues created by the Industrial Revolution. Hitler once seemed to have viable solutions and a number of people were interested in what the Nazis seemed to accomplish.

Whom Can We Trust If No One Is Trustworthy? One of my favorite quips from Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is when Tom is defined as “a glittering hero…the pet of the old, the envy of the young,” and there were “some that believed that he would be President, yet, if he escaped hanging.” With these few words, Twain captured the essence of leadership in our world. Those who get to the top are the fiercest, most determined, and most ruthless. Today, the latter quality has become so intense that we can no longer believe our leaders, and certainly not trust them to have our best interest in mind. I am not accusing any leader in particular, or even leaders as a whole. It is simply that in an egoistic world, where people vie to topple one another on their way to the top, the one at the top is clearly the one who trampled over and knocked down more people than anyone else. Concisely, to get to the top in an egoistic world you have to be the biggest egoist. So how do we know whom to trust? We don’t know and we cannot know. All we know is that we are in the dark. In a culture of unhinged selfishness, any conspiracy theory seems reasonable, while truth is nowhere to be found. When every person who says or writes something is trying to promote some hidden agenda, you have no way of knowing who is right, what really happened, or if anything happened at all. The only way to get some clarity in the news and goodwill from our leaders is to say “Enough!” to our current system and build something entirely independent. The guiding principle of such a system should be “information only,” no commentary. Commentary means that information has already been skewed. Information means saying only what happened, as much as possible, not why, and not who is to blame and who we should praise. Concurrently, we must begin a comprehensive process of self-teaching. We have to know not only what is happening, but why we skew and distort everything. In other words, we have to know about human nature and how it inherently presents matters according to its own subjective view, which caters to one’s own interest. To “clear” ourselves from that deformity, we must learn how to rise above our personal interest and develop an equally favorable attitude toward others. This is our only guarantee that our interpretation of things will be even and correct. Once we achieve such an attitude, we will discover that the bad things we see in our world reflect our own, internal wickedness. Our ill-will toward others creates a world where ill-will governs, and so the world is filled with wickedness and cruelty. Therefore, all we need in order to create positive leadership-and to generally eliminate ill-will from the world-is to generate goodwill within us. When we nurture goodwill toward others, we will fill the world with goodwill. As a result, the world will fill with kindness and compassion. By changing ourselves, we will create a world that is opposite from the world we have created through our desires to govern, patronize, and often destroy other people.

Loved what you have said. I have always maintained you don't get to the top of anything, by being Mr Nice Guy. It is the reluctant leader that is the good man. The one who doesn't want the position of leadership, but its thrust upon him by others. It is men such as these that are the true and capable leaders, NOT the ones that pursue leadership or power relentlessly at any cost. Everything you have written is so wise and true particularly your statements on the vital importance of changing ourselves on the individual level, if we are to change the world for the better. Thank you so much for your comment and your insight, have a good day.

He just simply didn't want to be king. He understood it was a shallow position to be in. He had NO real power therefore could not have an effective impact on his country. He was merely a puppet in the hands of the government. His power was purely symbolical and when he realized that he could not even make his own decisions with respect to his own private life, he decided the job didn't worth it. Quite understandably. After all even criminals in prison are allowed to marry whoever they want, what's the point in being king of England if you can't enjoy some of the basic rights everybody else take for granted. His abdication was an incredible act of freedom and he paid a heavy price for it as he became ostracised from his family and exiled from his country

This story can be seen as a tragic romance created in part by hypocrisy and rigidity. King Edward VIII, head of the Church of England , could not marry a divorced woman with living X-husbands, but he could have remained king and kept Wallis as a mistress. LOL, or something. IMO, there is a bigger picture of two royal couples. I find Edward and Wallis to both be accomplished and talented people who could have done a lot of good in England. When the war began, IMO, England most needed King George VI, Queen Elizabeth and the princesses Elizabeth and Margaret. They were the royal family unit surviving the bombings and terror. Wallis and Edward would not have had children. Undoubtedly there would have been factions that would have used the love story as a wedge to harm the government or the war effort. King George VI began his reign complete with a lovely family which was a huge asset to help lead the country through the war to victory. (I am American and these are my opinions. The Edward/Wallis love story belongs to the world. People in the UK likely have other opinions based upon life at the time.)

Most of us had never heard of it because it was never talked about .Even in those days a divorce ,or God forbid an out of marriage baby were spoken of in hushed tones . In your country Wallis and the prince were front page news for about 2 years Over here there was a news blackout and most of the population only found out in early December 36 ,and that was because a Bishop went to the papers and created hell .
