I had the chance of meeting Giya Kancheli once: I was working for the philharmonic orchestra of Antwerp, city in which he lived. Though I like his musical esthetic, I always thought that the music from Soviet Russia was incredibly rich in diversity and offered solutions and alternatives to the western arteriosclerosis of serialism. Alfred Schnittke, Galina Ustvolskaja, Sofia Gubaidulina, Rodion Shchedrin, Edison Denisov and Valentin Silvestrov, to me, are influential figures in this specific contemporary music, each contributing uniquely to the evolution of musical expression. Alfred Schnittke's compositions are renowned for their innovative blend of styles, incorporating elements of post-modernism and neoclassicism. His ability to fuse diverse genres and create emotionally charged works, such as his Concerto Grosso series, has left an indelible mark on contemporary classical music. Rodion Shchedrin has similarly pushed boundaries with his avant-garde compositions and Sofia Gubaidulina is known for her spiritually inspired works that delve into the depths of human emotions and the transcendent nature of music. In contrast to Gubaidulina's introspective style, Galina Ustvolskaya embraced a more brutal and uncompromising musical language. But it is Valentin Silvestrov, often associated with the post-modernist movement, who offers a deeply introspective and contemplative approach to composition. His works, characterized by subtle nuances and a focus on tonal exploration, invite listeners into a realm of profound musical reflection. He played a pivotal role in shaping the contemporary musical landscape. His willingness to challenge conventions and experiment with form has opened up new avenues for artistic expression. The fusion of tradition and innovation in his works serves as a testament to the rich diversity within contemporary classical music. Valentin Silvestrov’s groundbreaking contributions continue to influence and inspire composers, musicians, and audiences alike, ensuring a lasting impact on the ever-evolving tapestry of musical creativity. In an era where music often caters to mass appeal, the works of all these composers (and there are many more) are refreshing reminders of the unique voices that can emerge from deep introspection, artistic integrity, and unbounded creativity. Their legacies will continue to inspire and captivate audiences for generations to come.

Valentin Silvestrov should be attributed not to Gubaidulina or Ustvolskaya, but directly to the unique movement of the Kyiv Avant-garde - students of Boris Lyatoshinsky: Hrabovsky, Hodziatsky, Huba etc which, unfortunately, are still little studied and not properly appreciated in Western institutions.
