I remember the Johnny Horton song! I must have been five years old! Now I will read 'Doctor Zhivago.' I actually never heard of Nevil Shute before but I just bought one of his novels on Amazon. Well worth the time to watch this video!

Before teaming up with Richard Rodgers, Oscar Hammerstein collaborated with the great Jerome Kern to create what is widely considered to be the first "musical"....the transition from Broadway operetta to the modern musical....."Showboat". Such great tunes as "Ol' Man River", and "Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man O' Mine". Today, "Showboat" is often considered racist, but actually it's just the opposite. The main them of the show is ANTI-racism. Think of the comedy "All in the Family" where the bigotry is laid out for all to see, thus diminishing it more so than any protest. "Showboat" did much the same.

Your comment on Jesse Belvin's death made me curious, so I looked him up on Wikipedia. It's so sad that he, his wife and their driver died in that apparent manner. All he wanted to do was entertain people.

Richard Wright and Zora Neal Hurston died in the same year? That's like dropping an atom bomb on African-American literature. They were actually nemeses, as Richard Wright unfairly criticized Hurston for what we'd call "incorrectness" today, leading to her 'cancellation' until Alice Walker (The Color Purple) rediscovered her masterpiece 'Their Eyes Were Watching God.''
