In Northern Preah Vihear, Lao a Way of Life (Cambodia news in Khmer)

In Mekong River villages near the northern Cambodian border, Lao is the primary language. VOA Khmer's Pich Samnang travels to the remote Khone waterfalls near Laos and interviews residents of four villages in Kampong Sra Lao II commune. It's so regretful that we lost all these large chunks of territory to Vietnam. And now the Hun Sen govt. are encourage their congress to learn the Vietnamese language? That is outrages.

Who cares Lao and Khmer people have a great relationship where ever we go. The former King of Lanxang was raised and educated by Khmer King. He also married a Khmer princess that became the queen of Lao people. So we are so much closer in past relationships.

Stung Treng was first a part of the Khmer Empire, then the Lao kingdom of Lan Xang, and later the Lao kingdom of Champasak. After the Franco-Siamese War of 1893, Chiang Taeng (Stung Treng) was administered by French Lower Laos from 1893 to 1904. In 1904 French Laos traded the province to the French Protectorate of Cambodia in exchange for Champassak, leaving a small Laotian minority in Cambodia. The lao people living in strung treng are losing their native tongue and speaking more khmer.

Now I question the race and the motive of the reporter behind this video. It seems to me he tried to create conflict between Lao and Khmer people who live together harmoneously for most parts of many centuries and to take attention away from land grabbing Vietnam. I just wonder if he is Vietnamese origin. That said, there more than 2 million pure Vietnamese (real number could exponencially higher) live in Cambodia. Vietification of Cambodia is a highly success and close to complete - Vietbodia.

They can not become Lao or to be a part of Laos just because they speak Lao. Khmer Krom now part of Vietnam, Khmer Luer or Khmer Surin or other provinces in now Thailand been speaking Khmer why they would not become part of Cambodia once again? If you in Cambodian territory you are always Cambodian, they have to learn the language of the country they live in or the govt must build school to educate them.

I agree, man. What a big deal. Lao and Khmer have been living together harmoniusly and peacefully for hundred years. There are 49 ethnic groups in Laos, many of them don't speak a single Lao word. I think Hunsen just try to take attention away from the fact that he gave away much of Cambodia's territory to Vietnam. Beside my Lao people including Lao Issan, I love Khmer people the most. It's a disappointment to see some hateful comments posted by Khmer people.

I'm shock to hear this. The government is too busy helping themselves and taking orders from Hanio. Years of government neglect will cause great harm to the young Khmer generations, not knowing what nationality they actualy belong to. Hope there will be change soon. But I don't expect the priminister to see this anytime soon because he has limited vision!
