This is the book which truly changed me. I'm only 19 years old and I finished reading all the seven volumes few months ago. I am always looking for something which gives me a direction and a sense of purpose, and I think this book succeeded in doing that. I have always been heavily invested into art or anything artistic, but before this book I never really realised the real meaning of what art is and how the pursuit of art can be a way to truly understand life. I genuinely feel like this book changed how I perceive everything around me, in a way which no other book have managed to do. Maybe I sound a bit pretentious saying all this, but I don't know how else to explain my experience with this book. There are so many great things about this book, but the passages on art are my favourite, and I felt my inner artist answering to these beautiful ideas presented by Proust. I learnt so much from this book, and everything about it is truly invaluable to me, and I'm so glad that I read it! And I'm glad that you read it too!! Great video and thanks for sharing your views :)

What an excellent video! Congratulations on finishing the project. I haven’t read Proust yet but intend to next year. I have been successful in completing some literary goals since my retirement. Your tips for reading are very useful. Go in with a plan and be consistent. I have read six Trollope novels, The Brothers K, War and Peace, and Anna K over two years along with other small projects. I’m pleased. As always, thanks for being there!

Great and insightful video! I'm currently working my way through In Search of Lost Time (on the second volume now) and loving it. I find myself thinking about the book a lot even when not actively reading it.

A great review thank you for posting. I loved Swann's way and am on my way through the second at the moment. I've not read a book like it and have experienced, through the description, transportation to the very moments in the book. Wow.

My box set of In Search of Lost Time finally arrived - so your video came just on time! I think I will take at least a whole year on his work instead of doing one per month

Omg what a coincidence! I just received a copy of Swann's Way for my birthday last month! 😃 I don't know if I'll ever make it through the whole work, but I think I would like to. Glad to hear your thoughts on it!

I wouldn't recommend trying to read this work straight through cover to cover (you will likely give up as many have after Swann's Way). Read a volume, take a break, read the next volume and take your time. It could take a year.

Agreed with the "you need a reading plan" thought. Took me two years to finish it! Just got to it about two weeks ago. Read the Moncrieff translations. My current recommendation is "go straight for the 7th book" for some of the people I've recommended it to. I liked how you say "it doesn't have much of a plot". Feeling so ignorant finding out the Dreyfuss affair was a real thing (facepalm). When I started reading it and seeing how the guy does barely use any periods it made me think of Faulkner. After finishing the whole think I don't really see the parallel anymore between the two. Worth mentioning is the fact that the Moncrieff translation I read barely uses any "10 dollar words" and was almost 100% understandable for this non-native English speaker without ever having to look up a word.

Thank you very much for the video and sharing your ideas. Would have loved to hear something about the publishing process of the latter volumes, I read they came out after his death so I wonder if they were really finished or he was still working on them.

Thank you for sharing your reading experience of In Search of Lost Time and recommending a specific English translation. I'm sure that's very helpful for people watching this video. I couldn't recommend one because I read it in the original French.

You should be a contestant in the Monty Python Summarise Proust Competition LOL BTW La Comédie-Francaise during the 2020 lockdown did a 149 video series of the actors reading À la recherche du temps perdu which I enjoyed.

I loved most of it, but did have a difficult time with the sexual situations you mentioned, but not for the reasons you allude to. It struck me that the author or protagonist was presenting the characters cruelly and with a heap of disdain. Is it just me? 🙅‍♀️
