Having true motivation when seeking knowledge!
Shaykh Abdul Fattah Abu Ghuddah رحمه الله defines the term 'Hafidh of Hadith' as:
- One who has memorised at the very least 20 thousand hadith
- One who has memorised their chains, their authentic ones and their less authentic ones (one Hadith can have multiple chains with different narrators)
- Knowing the eras of the narrators and their (un)reliability, such that what he doesn’t know is less than what he knows, such that if he says regarding a narrator: “I don’t know him”, that narrator is regarded as one of those who are unknown.
This definition really gives a minimum and no limit because many Muhadithun had memorised over 100,000 Hadith, (each chain to a single Hadith is considered separate).
It is only our deficiency that we changed its meaning to mean a Hafidh of Qur’an.
