In Search of Pakohe, A traditional stone used for tool making and carving.

A trip to the South Island wouldn't be the same without looking for Argillite or Pakohe which has been traditionally used for making stone tools by the early Maori. After a bit of traveling back and forth around the southern part of the South Island, we found some. OK - it wasn't a hard fossick, probably one of the easiest of the trip resulting in a very carvable stone that takes a nice polish.
