Alexandria is a city well worth touring in Egypt. It’s true there are no pyramids here, but Alexandria is rich in history - it was at one time the capital of Egypt, after all, and the ancient history lover will find some fascinating ruins and artifacts to drool over. The city from which Cleopatra once ruled, and which famous Romans like Julius Caesar and Marc Antony visited, was home to the Great Lighthouse, to a University at which notable scholars of the ancient world worked and taught, and the Library of Alexandria, where thousands of ancient books were held, a vast repository of knowledge in he days of the Ptolemies, the Macedonian dynasty that ruled Egypt from 305 to 30 BCE.
Thank you for watching this episode of the #antiquitiestravelguide. We hope you enjoy it as much as we enjoyed making it.

Great video as always ... @31:45 I spotted some evidence that I think weirdos such as unchartered X and the rest of the groovy gang will probably use for future proof that people in the later period had lost the knowledge and capabilities to carve depictions in stone🤣. I'm still waiting on an answer from him as to what material they used to crush diamonds for all these Ferris- wheel-sized supersonic circular saws? But unfortunately, he can't say diamond because unfortunately for him he has to stick to his lame story that for example, granite cannot be used to shape and work granite. The foundation of their whole made-up narrative is the MOHs scale, i just wish someone that they would need to take notice of and listen to would tell them what that scale is actually for because their whole dreamed-up world of BS collapses and crumbles.

I really like the story that any ship that came into port they were asked to give over any and all books and the library would copy them and give the ships back their books before they left port. I think that's an awesome way to increase your holdings in your library.

What I heard was that Eratosthenes was called 'Beta' because he was the second-best scholar in the Greek world... with 'Alpha' being Archimedes of Syracuse. I.e. Eratosthenes was not quite as smart as one of the very smartest guys in the entirety of human history, and it was a jokey way of saying he'd probably have been known as the greatest mind of his age had he lived at any other time.

Some of the most amazing items were the female statues that showed a mixture of Greek and Egyptian elements, virtually nude but with the transparent drapery that showed both Greek and Egyptian styles. This can be seen in Hellenistic Buddhist statues in places like India and Central and Western Asia. I now regret having concentrated, in my single trip to Egypt, only on pre-Greco Roman sites from Giza southward. Thanks, Prof. Miano, for this fascinating video.

It's only a video game but Assassins Creed Origins seems to do an outstanding job of recreating Egypt (and Alexandria of course) under the Ptolemies. Some of the ruins and artifacts here kind of look familiar! As a video game it's not going to be 1:1 scale and it's focus is to be entertainment not a historical tool. But despite of that it still looks very impressive and it would be interesting to see your reaction/opinion of it's effort one day. Otherwise great video I enjoyed watching this!

Great video as always, I loved exploring Alexandria in Assassins Creed Origins. While the developers put a monumental effort to flesh it out accurately, as with a bunch of the rest of Ptolemaic Egypt and Cyrenaica; that was still a videogame. So spent so much time wondering and researching after what it was really like.

I love your travel videos the most. I really like seeing you in normal clothing, and interacting with the historical items and places, and to see your colleague and friend, who is not only very knowledgable, but is also extremely photogenic! Even beautiful! That's a real bonus, to have along a colleague who is exceptionally good at what they do, and is also very easy on the eyes! The videos done in your home are very good as well, and I loved your collaborations, especially the one with Milo from Miniminuteman. Although I do like him and what he does very much, but I fail to see exactly why he has gained such a big audience in such a short time! Is it the natural language he uses? The F word? I think there is something to be said for the relaxed approach. But if one's future income relies on being considerred "respectable" I guess the casual language is out. Anyway, the more exposes that are published the better, of the charlatans out there who are even being boosted now by Netflix! Which just blows my mind with ANGER ! ! ! Give 'em sh*t man! Tear those bast*rds like Hancock down! Despite the obviously very high costs of travel, the chance to see you describe and react to these treasures and monuments is just priceless. Thank you so much! You could make them longer if you wanted. We would welcome even more views of the process of travelling and entering and navigating the places and the sites. Personally I can't get enough of your travel. You also provide the one of the most unique and most necessary viewpoints on all of KZbin. I think the quality history people on YT need to work together more, and do more full frontal attacks on the liars and theives like Hancock. I would love to see you people pool some $ and hire a private detective, like very ethical fellow that was hired by Amber Heard to destroy Johnny Depp, but who switched sides when after 2 years he could find no dirt on him. I would really like to see Hancock exposed. But I realize that isn't your thing. Anyway, keep up the fantastic work, Dr Miano! From 1 of your biggest fans in Canada. ❤

One of the things which caused me pause for thought was the range of faces carved in stone. They are varied and one of them was unusually pretty. Beranicha III I think. At timestamp 8.28. So the sculptors were carving images of the people. Although there is one dynasty where the faces were unnaturally elongated vertically. The fashion of the time probably was that long faces were attractive. But mainly the sculptors carved true to life as they could.

I well remember my first visits to the Main Library in my university. They awe at the knowledge that is there, just waiting for you to make it your own. I spent many hours in there for fun, reading various periodicals, browsing the books, often in field that were no my own just out of interest. My own faculty had its own, much smaller, library, I spent many, many hours in there are well, just reading random stuff. Hundreds of hours, probably. As a graduate I can still access the various publications in digital form, and I could visit the Library in person. But nowadays I just browse Wikipedia. Less glamorous, but much information is there and quite reliable. Google has specialised search functions for scientific publications if I really want to dig into a subject.

I really enjoyed “living life vicariously through you.” I do have one suggestion, and it is just me…instead of dubbing the video with modern rock/pop music, I think it would be more perfect to dub it with music that’s more period correct for the site. (whatever music that would have been).

I wish you had mentioned that "THE" Library as in a single, special building containing the whole collection in all likelyhood NEVER existed. The storage and reading rooms were always spread out over various temples and public buildings... Also papyrus is generally a fragile material. If you've collected 1,000,000 tests in papyrus and know a papyrus survives under best care and storage conditions for 50 years, you KNOW you need to copy at least 20,000 old papyri every year or you'll lose books to time. Probably way more as texts that get read a lot will deteriorate faster... that's a lot of money for scribes and papyrus...

My impression from these videos is that the museums of Cairo are light, airy, and packed with tourists. The museums in Alexandria are darker and have very few visitors. And the admission fees seem to be somewhat lower. I also get the impression that the only food available in Egypt is street food. It also seems that if one carves anything out of stone, no matter how insignificant, that two thousand years later, someone will dig up what's left of it and put it on a plinth. Each fragment will get its own plinth.

@varyolla435
@varyolla435 8 ай бұрын
Just something to bear in mind folks. The Library as noted was merely = a repository. As such it contained information which actually sourced from abroad. Why does this matter?? It matters because the "alternative" schtick in their endless quest to rationalize based upon what they do not see - as opposed to what they see as academia does - at times try to justify their beliefs of supposed "lost technology" by pointing to = the Library and its eventual destruction. Thus while libraries in general make information more easy for us to access since it is stored in a single location = if that library were to be destroyed then the information it contained should still exist - save for it will once again be dispersed rather than centralized. Moral of the story: if the internet were to irreparably crash then the information contained on it would still exist because of course = we put it there. Remember this when some try to claim a purported loss of information relating to some unsubstantiated civilization for which no evidence actually exists to show it was real = by pointing to the destruction of this library. The Library of Alexandria as alluded to simply held knowledge sourced to other places - hence it was not the origin of all that knowledge. Enjoy your day.

Also: technology doesn't exist in a vacuum. A modern automobile requires metal and plastic and other materials, shaped into its parts. Which means mines for the metals, oil wells for plastic, and facilities to make the plastics and other synthetics, and then other facilities to make the parts, then factories to assemble the parts into the complete vehicle. That's not getting into all the infrastructure just to make the mining and fabricating possible. Ancient super-technology would leave undeniable traces, not ambiguous blobs and blits.
