I have just initiated conceptual systems for building a new home in east Texas, which will be semi remote, with subcontractors used to the same old same old. I used their product on the block walls of my basement in northern Virginia which I did myself. INSOFAST is FANTASTIC, easy and fast to install and very effective. I had one wall done and it already it made the space warmer and more comfortable. I’m not in the building trades. I’m an attorney. I had zero problems installing it and it was easy. I strongly recommend this.

Man, this took a minute to get going, but once you actually got into the products this looks reasonably cool. I really really like how that polymer stud doesn’t appear likely to crack if you put a fastener near the edge.

I went from a global corporate job to living in Minnesota (don't ask : ) I bought a foreclosure in 2012 and went to work fixing it up. It wasn't in bad condition - but I knew nothing. II just hired this and that skilled guy. It was a walkout and the back and part if the side wall were not insulated. I used Insofast. As I didn't want to deal with permits, etc,. I just did it myself over the weekend when no workers were around. I cut and glued them to the wall. It was easy. I then put up sheetrock which was harder actually. I left the taping to the skilled guys : ) Monday morning the workers were stunned. They asked who did it? I never told them it was me : ) Insolfast ($543), along with putting in an egress window ($2000) done by a contractor, and my sweat equity, added a legal and usable bedroom to the property. Dean from Insofast guided me. They were still a "start up" then. I went on to buy many more properties but none that needed Insofast unfortunately.

I’ve been using In-Sofast for a long time. At least 10 years. It’s super fast and you can literally hang from any shelf or TV mount forever. We had two guys hang on a TV mount we installed on a basement wall. Excellent product.

I've been slowly putting this stuff into my basement and it is SO easy to install. I started with the 2.5" kind with 1" of pink foamboard over it, but from now on I'll be using the 3.75" stuff and do it in one step.

Check out SCIP construction. It’s the reverse of ICF so it may be what you are thinking of.

I think this kind of thing is the future. Everyone will need exterior insulation sooner or later. Once everyone is putting down exterior insulation, everyone will then ask: isn't there a better way to fasten this stuff down?!?! The foam companies will build whole systems just like ZIP sheathing in a complex system to save you steps on the job site.

I have used this product in our basement here in Minnesota. Our foundation was bock. Waterproofed the wall and the panels went up quick and have not been an issue. I would agree if your wall is not straight, that would be more challenging. They did that with this product on this old house.

I used Insofast on the interior of our 700sqft cottage we self built with dry stacked and fully grouted concrete block. Apart from 1 or 2 places, we just used a high quality construction adhesive and added a Tapcon or w where needed. The interlocking panels were a breeze to work with and pulling electrical through the provided chases was as simple as possible. Hanging sheetrock was a breeze, even in the corners. The only heat in our concrete block cotrage is a small 5000 btu vent free propane stove and we are quite comfortable at sub zero temps. Summer is comfortable at over 100f with a small window unit from Walmart. We are absolutely happy with our decision to give Insofast a try!!

@@insofast-continuous-insulation It's a six-container build at ground level using high cube containers, 3 for the garage, one for a workshop and two for an ADU. There will be a reefer container on top of the shop container for the mechanicals. Only the ADU will get InSoFast externally with spray foam internally. We hope to start the house build in another year when, hopefully, my stock goes up. We hope to be off-grid. Windows spec'd are LiteZone with an R-17 rating. We're located in Sebastopol, California. I intend on having a KZbin channel to record the process and document our permaculture homestead.

I love In-So-Fast. Used it on my own basement and have referred several buddies to use this stuff. Such a good product. Pro tip. Make sure you put the glue on the riveted stud and glue the corners. My cousin had a contractor install hers “2.5i” and the contractor glued it on backwards. 😢

You nailed it, guys. It's all about comfort but science is still rolled up into that word. Bottom line is that climate control systems won't have to work as hard to maintain that comfortable temp/humidity. Highly insulated and air tight = a very peaceful and comfortable home (caveat - filtered-recycled-air ventilation system is a must though). So, wondering if it were made out of XPS (for below-grade applications), would it be more superior?

With the application specific to shipping containers and their fitting over the corregations on the walls and ceilings, seems to me that this product should be molded to fit ag panels interiors for the ever popular barndo and metal bldg structure. It would completely rid the self building homeowner of the need to hire a spray foam guy and it would reduce some of that cost, like the interior 2x4 or 2x6 stud framingas well.

Cargo containers have a standard shape. With sheet metal manufacturers their profiles vary. Also the profile is not as high with most sheet metals so the benefit of form fitting is not as great. We sell ICF and EPS, quite a bit of 4x8 EPS sheets for post and beam construction, you can get them custom thickness, 5.5" is common.

I can buy closed cell sheets for way less and install them with glued 2by2 inserts on center's at way cheaper cost.

AMVIC makes similar product called ENVIROSTRAP at 2 5/8" or 3 .5" thick and it comes in 2 types, wood stud or plastic in both a flush version and a 1/2" proud version for rainscreen air gap R10 or11 to R-14-15. So if you have a 2x6 frame and add exterior EPS you will exceed next code which will be R-32 in a few years. I like those window flashings are available from Ed

I just redid my house. 2nd story additon. I used 2 layers of 1" xps with 1x3 battens and flatlok screws. Foam was roughly 2500 Screws were 1200 Battens were 500 Tape for seams was 200 Roughly 3400k I installed it and it took a long long time. This stuff would have been 6500. Honestly, looking back, i think i would have paid the extra money for this for many reasons. Sure its quite expensive, however, the installation of 2 layers of foam was a huge pain when i was up on the ladders. I did almost all of the remodel myself. I think this is over priced, however, its probably worth that extra money.

Thanks for the price comparison. The $100-ish for 40 sf, 125% of a 4x8 sheet, is a lot more than 25% more than sheet foam. It is probably worth it to have the integral studs for a basement or container building, but hard to justify the cost in other scenarios.

This will work very well where seismic sheathing is needed. My one concern is carpenter ant colonization within the foam. I've had some bead board stored in a shed become riddled by carpenter ants where I am located. I imagine that encapsulation might prevent this. Would the addition of something like borate to the foam be the answer? Please advise.

Very interesting. Couple questions. 1. Could you use it below concrete as a sub slab insulation? Then run radiant heating above it and then poor over. Could even put a strip along the lower wall edge to make it continuous. 2. Could you just glue to zip on exterior? This would eliminate penetrations and the ram bridging.

I have always trusted filler foam to install a door or window frame without screws.. Just wedge the frame into it's best position ..go around with the foam and remove wedges when dry. I have been met with incedulity by other Builders who just do not understand the full bonding strength of Foam adhesion compared to just using the usual screw frame fixings. I have never seen any comparison official testing but if its out there, I would love to see it. Im in the UK so may not be suitable for other Countries.

Thermal bridging in the floor is something you can't eliminate. Containers are more expensive and are sub standard performance compared to a standard build.

If one were to lay the InSoFast panels across 16" on center floor joists, then attach 1/2" plywood on top, would it be strong enough to walk on? If yes, would a floating installation (InSoFast not screwed to floor joists) or Screw down installation be better?

Hi Matt, my basement wall has a bunch of concrete knots from tie rods, and some of them are 1 inch thick and sticks out, so the wall is not going to be flat. What’s the best way to flatten the basement wall?

Looks like a great system if you want to get about half the insulation of ICF. I would bet the cost to build even a 2x4 wall with Zip sheathing then go all the way around the house again with the insulation is nearly the cost of ICF without all the other benefits, thermal mass, fire proof, tornado proof, sound deadening, smaller HVAC, lower insurance rates etc.

There are 2 foams : EPS is expanded Polystyrene beads and XPS which is extruded Polystyrene (Styrofoam).. Expanded is most common.. used as packaging for TV's etc and what is used by Insofast as it is expanded from small beads to larger with steam.. This is probably how the plastic 'Studs' become encapsulated in the boards. I assume the perforations in the 'stud' are to minimise cold bridging. neat..

How do you trim out windows with this exterior insulation? The windows will be recessed.

I installed in-so-fast years ago. It was a nightmare. If you have uneven wall, which is probably majority of America, this thing does not go on well. Also the adhesive has to be able to bond to both foam and concrete. Years ago the options for adhesives weren’t that great so maybe that’s changed. The real nightmare came with the plastic strips. They have almost no holding power. Drywall Screws would strip out easily and it wasn’t possible to shoot nails into concrete with them, so basically the whole point of avoiding attaching a frame or wood strips was defeated. Sometimes the simpler solution is the best solution. I would go with rigid foam sheets and either frame outside of them with 2x3 or attach wood strips if your walls are straight.

Excellent product. Could this be used over an attic floor to reclaim space? Typically, you would have to remove some blown-in insulation in my area. Essentially I'm asking could someone lay it on 2 x studs and add some osb on top of it.

@@buildshow Hi Matt. I searched your channel and it looks like you haven’t reviewed SCIP (Structural Insulated Concrete Panels) yet. They are the reverse of ISF construction so no interior or exterior cladding needs to be used from what I have seen. It is hard to believe that the system could be so simple so I was hoping you would investigate to see if there was any downside.

In the basement floor application was this being laid over compacted fill in lieu of concrete or on top of a poured concrete slab?

This is intended for over a conventional concrete slab.

Denver has many older homes that are double and triple wythe masonry walls. The interior side of double wythe wall surfaces are cold and make rooms uncomfortable in winter months. We also have challenges with condensation and mold on these interior wall surfaces when its very cold. Would In So Fast be a good application to furr interior walls to increase energy efficiency of a double wythe wall? I have concerns with condensation collecting from dewpoint as it follows the condensation channels at the rear of the wall. How does this water from condensation find its way out of the system when used in an interior application? Usually, I would recommend to get the insulation layer to the outside of the building envelope, but these homes are classic Tudors and would look like crap to do a 3 coat traditional stucco or rainscreen system, it would completely change the style of the home. All ideas considered, thank you everyone.

I talked to Rocky Mountain Masonry Institute and they said that generally, it's bad practice to insulate the interior side of existing above-ground double wythe masonry walls. It goes back to Matt's old adage that you leave older homes detailed the way they're built or have a new set of problems. When you insulate double wythe from the interior side it can cause spalling and all freezing temperatures to reach deeper through this solid brick wall increasing the rate at which the brick and mortar will degregate. No easy fix for my clients who have sweating walls behind frames hung on wall surfaces in the winter months, and it causes black mold. So I need to hunt down the source of moisture.

It is vapour permeable, so needs a good vapour barrier on the inside, especially if used in a basement. No mention of interior cladding

In the video he had onstructions but the panels were precut so he didn't waist time cutting anything. They also don't tell you to use a heavy duty gun for the glue. The first one we bought, we had to use two hands to put on glue. We got four sheets up in one DAY . After we fixed ( got a cast, heavy duty, gun ) we did much better. Other then that it's a good product.

Couple comments. Don’t use cold glue. Also upgrade to PL Premium as it guns so much better. Lastly, get a good gun like the Tajima

Matt, am I seeing things or is the "build" neon held up by 2 or 3 flimsy plastic ties? Also, it's not level. The beam from which it's suspended is level, or appears to be level in reference to the camera angle, but the sign isn't. Just frank feedback from a frequent viewer...

Will this adhere to concrete foundation? And then be able to attach stone veneer over the top?

Depends on how the stone veneer would be attached. If mortared, then you would probably need to attach a metal screen before the stone to give the mortar something to hold onto. The screw on types should be able to be attached directly.

Great thinking! Definitely need to be cautious with that. Don’t tape or seal it to the wall OR use a bug screen as the protection at the bottom.

I think they said 200 psf. The contact area of a car tire is less than 1 sf, so it would have trouble supporting a motorcycle much less a car. If you put a layer of a material over the top to distribute the weight, it might, but there are better foam that are actually used for supporting vehicle loads.
