Regarding the writing on the keys, we've consulted with a colleague who worked in the Bluthner workshop for many years. He replied: "I’d say plate/sheet/single piece is most likely! Almost certainly original as it’s a rather expensive way to top keys. Very likely a special order."

Thank you for your encouragement. Bluthner grand pianos made between about 1885 and 1939 are consistently fine pianos. Marcus.

Although the action is replaced, was it definitely a roller from new? Can you tell by the keys and the hammer rail? I've played Rhapsody In Blue on a patent, and it can be made to work! I think this piano sounds quite beautiful as it is, and it looks spectacular honestly I wouldn't have anything done to it unless it needed regulation.

Thank you for your comment and kind words about the tone. As far as I know, all Bluthner grands made after 1925 have roller actions as this one does. Marcus

I read 'plate ivory'. Does that make any sense?

Thank you for your question. I referred back just now to the restorer who used this term and he wrote back "I have a feeling it might refer to single piece ivories. Terribly inefficient use of such expensive material!!" Marcus
