In The Beginning - Genesis 1:1-2

Genesis! Revered as sacred by three of the world’s major religions, this book is widely known, yet often misunderstood. Over the next few months, we will delve into this foundational book of the Bible, uncovering its timeless truths and, by God’s grace, overcoming our own misconceptions.
Together, we will explore the core themes of Genesis that shape our understanding of God, humanity, and the world around us. From the story of creation to the fall of mankind, we will witness God’s relentless pursuit of redemption through His covenant promises. As we journey through the book, we’ll discover how its themes of creation, covenants, faith, and God’s sovereignty continue to speak into our lives today, offering hope and purpose in a world that often feels uncertain. I pray that you will engage in our study faithfully. If you do, the beginning of God’s story-and your place in it-will become abundantly clear.

1. How familiar are you with the book of Genesis? What are some of the first thoughts or images that come to mind when you think of it?
2. Why is it significant that (1) God alone existed before creation, (2) He created everything from nothing, and (3) He created all things, seen and unseen? How should these truths shape and strengthen your faith?
3. Why does God describe the earth as "formless and void," and what is the meaning behind the "Spirit of God hovering over the waters"?
4. How should our understanding that the Creator God is also our covenant God affect (1) our trust in Him, (2) our hope for the future, and (3) our worship of Him?
