Interesting! I never really know what to think of him. I like the many drills and different kinds of soft landing options he uses. Love his ‘new’ elite girls. But I have read the stories as well...

Helen Harent My thoughts exactly... Him and Valeri both seem like changed men but it's hard to get over the stories from their past athletes.
@brigidm62796 жыл бұрын
I agree, but at the same time, you've got to hope a person can learn from their past, too.
@helenharent72126 жыл бұрын
I find it hard to believe he could not have changed. I mean; his bad reputation did not just come from ‘some’ rumors. If he would still be the same person and the atmosphere in his gym would be what they said it was, there wouldn’t be that many (young) girls in that gym, right? If I ever ended up sending my daughter to a guy like him, I would be right on top of things. Unfortunately, I can not really trust USAG to be on top of things too...
@WickedlyMe3286 жыл бұрын
Helen Harent everyone has a history, but he also had success too. He didn’t cause Henrich‘s eating disorder, that was a judge opening their mouth. Julissa Gomez was a freak accident.
@jojox97916 жыл бұрын
Helen Harent actually, right now USAG is safer than ever and more on top of things than ever... I just hope it stays that way I'm not sure why Valeri stepped down as Coordinator, he was in no way associated with anything that went down with Nassar, and I'm not sure, but I don't think any of his gymnasts we're. I like that they held quals at LSU, and the new national team training sites will be held at Simones gym in Texas....

Christy died from anorexia. Al never was the one who planted the seed about her being too heavy it was another coach. When he saw she was too weak he stopped her from competing. Julissa did get injured in a vault accident but that can happen to anyone really. They have made vaults larger to prevent this type thing. She actually died and was more critically injured due to hospital staff cutting off her oxygen supply. Look it up.. not saying that Al isn't a hard ass but he didn't kill anyone.
@brodypenn3 жыл бұрын
Thank you. So many rumors that they’re deaths were his fault when he tried preventing them. I also heard that judges called Christy fat and it also engraved the eating disorder. Smh so evil.
@anastasiakorkova91759 күн бұрын
@@brodypennyea, It is also a reality that gymnastics is an inherently dangerous sport, and fact of the matter is, you can’t be overweight and competitive. I’m not saying people need to starve them self’s, but Al didn’t know Christy was anorexic. I think it’s something he watches out for now a days.

I know I’m a little late to replying to this, but agreed. I used to go to GAGE (only when I was basically a toddler; we moved before I got on team). I distinctly remember ambulances coming in to get girls who had broken things and girls being forced to continue practicing even when they weren’t feeling well until they threw up on the floor. It was not a good environment.

Question: How is this man continuing to coach with his History. Wonder why Aly raisman did not name him. Ivana Hong said he virtually bullied her in the gym. He also called names to Christy Henrich that was a small part of her death.
@ovtransportation5 жыл бұрын
Sr Azul that was also a different era in gymnastics. Older girls werw sposed to look like little girls...NOT women. The JUDGES would tell the coaches "she needs to lose weight to get higher scores". Coaches wanted their athletes to do well so they told them what the judges said. He says many times HE'S LEARNED FROM HIS MISTAKES! After Christy died he was at the forefront of changing the body shaming culture in the sport

I am disgusted with the fact that this monster is still coaching young girls and that so many people are praising him (i hope it's only ignorance in their part otherwise shame on all of them). Two gymnasts he trained died, Julissa Gomez from an eating disorder (I know a judge was the main reason for it but he was definitely part of the problem) and Christy Henrich died from a broken neck from a vault accident. Karen Tiereny cracked her C-1 vertebra after he forced her to do a vault she did not want to. He also forced Ivana Hong to train on a broken ankle and told her not to seek medical help. He has often been accused of insulting his gymnasts, he even encouraged other gymnats to call Ivana Hong stupid. Al Fong isn't a legend he is just a terrible coach and a terrible person.

I've read Kristie Henrichs story. She was competing in Europe and she overheard two Eastern Bloc coaches talking, and that's where the seed was planted that she was too fat to compete/win. When she became too weak to train or compete Al Fong told her to get herself healthy and then she could come back.
