This is hands down my favorite video from SOT. I loved hearing the anecdotal stories from each of the panel. It was also great to hear some love for Japan's phenomenal and very underrated Ars Nova. The one of the many things that I love SOT is that I know Pete's first love is metal and heavier music, but when he does another genre, he expresses a profound love of the subject. Pete is a music lover.

I think a lot of credit is owed to the prog metal and specifically the tech Death scene. Cynic, Atheist, Death, Voivod, Pestilence. Of course Anglagard, Dream Theater and many people forget that the great Camel kicked off their late career in 1991 with the ambitious Dust and Dreams. Great show, a group of super sweet and genuine people with a deep appreciation of music!

Some of the first bands I got into when I came online in '99 and make the exhiliarating discovery that prog had started up again in the 90's -- Echolyn, The Flower Kings, Transatlantic, Magenta, Rocket Scientists, IQ, Ad Infinitum, Nexus, Gerard, Nathan Mahl, Anglagard, High Wheel, Djam Karet, Ayreon, Zero Hour, Symphony X and a bunch more I'm not recalling without looking thru my CDs.

Great video - very entertaining. Rand, seems we've been shadowing each other over the years! I was one of the people hanging out with Pendragon in the hotel bar at Progfest 1995, although I don't think we met. And Pete, unless I have things confused, I was a subscriber to SoT magazine (at least I think it was called SoT) back when it was incorporated into Progression. That situation worked out pretty well, at least from a subscriber's point of view. I'll be watching for more shows!

My personal saviours of prog through the 90s were Dream Theater, Spocks Beard and The Flower Kings. However back in 1996 I heard about an organisation called the Classic Rock Society (CRS) based in Rotherham, South Yorkshire about a 50 minute drive from where I live. The CRS had started in 1991 by a chap called Martin Hudson, and produced a fan magazine called Wondrous Stories. The CRS not only produced a great mag but also put on gigs - and while they werent solely there for prog, prog was a significant portion of the music they promoted. The first ever gig in the UK by Spock's Beard was put on by CRS in a school hall they used - they asked for members to help with funding, something I was more than happy to contribute to. Rick Wakeman became honorary president, Dave Cousins was also involved and they used to put on multi band festivals. I was a member and would go to their gigs every couple of weeks from March 1997 (Jadis) to October 2004 (The Flower Kings).I stopped due to developing a back problem - since sorted - which meant that I couldnt continue to drive to and attend the usually all standing gigs. If it wasnt for CRS I would never have become aware of bands like Spock's Beard, Flower Kings, Arena, Threshold, Jadis, Egdon Heath, Ritual, Rocket Scientists and Lana Lane, Mastermind, Jump, Grey Lady Down, Grace, Mr So & So, Landmarq, Quidam, Cast, Moria Falls (great music but not so great singer), Karnataka, Mostly Autumn, Parallel or 90 degrees, Flamborough Head, Ars Nova, Enchant. They also put on gigs by established artists like Rick Wakeman, Wishbone Ash, Ken Hensley, Focus, Steve Hackett, Jan Akkerman,Pendragon, Pallas, Galahad, IQ, John Wetton, Carl Palmer, Qango, Oliver Wakeman.

Taking "newer bands that helped re-ignite their love for progressive rock" literally, these are not necessarily Prog bands, but similar to Pete, bands they got me back into Prog as a metalhead. 1: Voivod - "Nothingface". Not a new band, but this album was a major shift in styles to more Prog direction (obvious ELP influence). Interviews with the band were the 1st time I heard of Van Der Graaf Generator and Gentle Giant. Still one of my all-time favorites. 2: Primus - "Sailing the Seas of Cheese". Watching Headbanger's Ball, they kept mentioning their King Crimson influence, who I didn't like growing up. I liked Primus, so I gave them another chance, and now KC is my favorite band. 3: Magellan - "Hour of Restoration". I was a college DJ at the time and remember putting this on and being amazed. Was a staple on my show (I still play them on my current show from time to time). Was typing this when it was brought up in the video, wasn't expecting anyone to mention it, so good to hear others appreciate it. 4: Echolyn - "As The World". It took many years for me to realize they were a few towns away from me. Despite that, I still haven't seen them live :( 5: Cynic - "Focus". IMO one of the greatest metal albums ever.

My son made an insightful comment about "neo-prog": in the 70s, bands did not set out to "make prog music", it was a natural, unforced "progression" with a fresh sense of excitement and discovery. The whole "neo-prog" thing feels forced to me. I've tried several bands and it just doesn't do it for me. There is one exception, Transatlantic's Bridge Across Forever, which I truly love. im not super familiar with prog rock thanks for your guys recomendations what you say, but since extreme metal is a subset of rock i have a few as a 90s kidinto death metal and black metal their were defiitely bands that ignited prog metal in the 90s .Opeth -My arms your Hearse, Cynic-Focus,Athiest -Elements (cynic and athiest revolutionized death metal by adding in jazz fusion),Agalloch -Pale Folklore (majestic band in the combining of black metal and folk and prog)and tied for 5 and honorable mentions i have 4 more lol that i cant decide between. Tourniquet -Psycho Surgery, Symphony X-Divine wings of Tragedy, Control Denied -Fragile art of Existence,and finally Edge of Sanity -Crimson .thanks for all the prog rock recomendations.

I really liked Platypus which featured Ty Tabor (King’s X) , Derek Sherinian, John Myung (Dream Theater) and Rod Morgenstein. They released 2 albums then Derek dropped out and they turned into Jelly Jam which released 4 albums. Great stuff that should be checked out. Hopefully one day you can cover them on a Prog show (or maybe I missed it)

I miss Rosfest being in Gettysburg. I discovered many prog bands through that festival. It was convenient for me living less than an hour from there. Now in Sarasota, Fl. Travelling that far is not in the cards for me. I never got a chance to see a Nearfest show but I have a dvd from one of the band's Abigail's Ghost concert from there.

Some great Prog during the 1990`s! Pendragon - `The World`, `Window of Life` and `Masquerade Overture` IQ - `Ever` Marillion - `Holidays In Eden` and `Afraid of Sunlight` Fish - `Vigil In A Wilderness of Mirrors` Flower Kings - `Stardust We Are` (If you only get one by this band make it this one!) Mostly Autumn - `For All We Shared` and `Spirit of Autumn Past` Arena - `Songs From The Lions Cage`, `Pride` and `The Visitor`. I thank the late great DJ Alan `Fluff` Freeman for introducing me to Arena(`Sirens` from the `Pride` album) Yeah I met Fish once after a Mostly Autumn gig in the pub and it didn`t go too well due to the fact that I couldn`t understand what he was saying!

Pendragon and IQ were formed in the early 1980’s so that’s why we didn’t pick them. They were part of the Second Wave aka NWOBPR New Wave Of British Progressive Rock. The 1980’s would be quite a challenge because there weren’t that many bands doing Prog. As the decade progressed the music, unfortunately didn’t and the albums that did went out of print and became scarce and pricey.

@@shyshift I hear what you`re saying there Rand! Interested to hear your story of meeting Clive Nolan. About seven years ago I bumped into him at a London Underground station and only got to speak with him for a minute or so and I got the impression that he couldn`t believe he`d been recognised! As you say a very nice guy. Anyway really enjoy listening and talking about Prog so will look out for future episodes on this channel with you contributing. Best wishes and thanks for your reply

@@SJHUE Sure and thank you for your interest. I spent hours with Pendragon. The reason their set isn’t on the Progfest ‘95 videos is because Clive had massive technical issues with his keyboard rig except for the Mellotron which worked perfectly. I had a cassette tape of my homemade music and he took the time to listen. Gayle Ellet from Djam Karet heard my song too and loved it. He was there as a band vendor selling their cds. I bought The Ritual Continues from him. I also ate breakfast with Clive and Peter Gee with Moria Falls. Clive wore a Marillion-Afraid Of Sunlight t-shirt most of the time. He loved that band.

@@shyshift Thanks for your reply. Wow Rand that sounds brilliant you`ve really managed to spend quality time with some great Prog musicians! Shame about the technical issues, I was not aware of that. Mind you whilst saying that I`d be happy to listen to the Mellotron for hours! Other than that chance meeting with Clive Nolan I mentioned the only other`s I`ve met Prog wise are Fish and Mick Pointer. Mick was at a Pendragon gig that I was attending. Can`t remember the year off hand but it was somewhere around the release of `The Visitor` by Arena as I remember seeing Arena live promoting that album and I`m pretty sure the Pendragon and Arena gigs were fairly close together time wise

Great recommendations, I will pick up some albums from this podcast.I attended a three night concert with Dream Theater on the 25th anniversary of Images and Words and they do repeat the same set list theses days, same thing for Distance Over Time tour, I got two gigs with the same exact same setlist (Orlando and Jacksonville gigs).

I saw Marillion at Reading Festival in 1982 way down the list but they were back in 1983 in second to top spot. They were awesome and did Grendel which was fantastic. I next saw them at the Mecca in Bradford. I saw Fish standing on a corner in Inverness waiting to cross the street in 2007.

Good choices there. Apart from Porcupine Tree though, I think the best prog from the 90s was coming from Sweden - Anglagard, Anekdoten, Landberk, Ritual, Sinkadus and probably some more I've yet to discover.

Without question, my list includes the following items: 1. Pendragon's "Masquerade Overture". Wow!!! What a disk. Still one of my favorites! 2. Dream Theater's "Awake". Oops. Mentioned before I knew. My favorite album by DT. Excellent musicianship. 3. Shadow Gallery's "Carved in Stone". SG is the Kansas of metal. I love this one to death. A brilliant catalog. Not a dud in the discography. 4. Spock's Beard's "Beware of Darkness". What can I say? Love this one. 5. IQ "Ever". A Geneisis clone? Not by any stretch. This one was brilliant. 6. Jadis "More Than Meets the Eye". Melodic but wonderful. A bit commercial but what a cast of players! 7. Arena "Songs from the Lion's Cage". This one is still one of my favorite Arena disks. Brilliant songs and brilliant musicianship. Great clutch of songs.

Gentlemen, what are the odds that the band whose initialize was two words and firends of Clive was... Moria Falls? "The Long Goodbye" was released in the timeframe you are talking about--and the Darlington was associated with Clive and Pendragon heavily for subsequent tours. It's in my collection somewhere so I cannot put my hands on it. I received a lot of rotation when I purchased it back in the day, but didn't age as well as others. The other notable mention that I forgot was "Rocket Scientists". The "Brutal Architecture" album was brilliant--and it wasn't long afterwards that I became a big Erik Norlander fan.
@musicnerd89693 жыл бұрын
Patrick Darlington--bass player. I think he was Peter Gee's bass tech for subsequent tours--but I am not sure. Moria Fall's first album was very good, whereas the 2nd had a few moments. Both were release by Verglas.

A really good band no one seems to mention much is Landberk from Sweden. They only put out 3 albums, all in the 90s. Some of their stuff is quite mellow and atmospheric but they really throw some of everything into their sound and they’re very unique to my ears. I love all 3 (or kind of 4) of their albums.

I saw Landberk at Progfest ‘95 and talked to their guitar player after the show. Great band.
@erikberg53633 жыл бұрын
Wow, very cool! The whole band is fantastic but Reine Fisk’s guitar work especially stands out to me. It’s a shame they are so unknown and underrated by many even compared to their close peers like Änglagård and Anekdoten. I kind of feel that they were ahead of their time, maybe if they had come out in the last decade or so they would have been more successful. I love the vintage feel of their debut but there is something about their 2nd and 3rd albums that sounds “modern” to me even now, 25 or so years after their release. Their albums are also out of print and very hard to come by, the cheapest copies I’ve found for sale are over $60 (CAD). I can’t afford to spend that much unfortunately and they only have 1 EP on any streaming services so it seems the only feasible way to listen to them is KZbin or illegal downloading, neither of which help to support the band in any way. I can’t help but think that some reissues might help them get some of the recognition they deserve, hopefully that happens soon.
Listen to Timothy Pure. 2 great concept albums: Blood Of The Berry & Island Of The Misfit Toys. Classic prog like Pink Floyd (Animals) or Marillion (Brave) or IQ (Ever). Great prog of the 90’s.
