I was there. 16 at the time. Guy beside me in the stands yelled at Jay when he was on the deck " Jay can you do a 540 tail whip for my kid" that's why Jay looks back at the stands after on the nose tap! Great memory!

Jay was so good!! 540 whip on vert even today on super light bikes dont compare to muscle’n a 45lbs bike let alone wearing 40lbs of protective bulky sweaty gear! Megaaaaa props.

Heavy helps.... light bikes is all body force, heavy bikes you rode into your snap then twisted... us old vert riders call it auto pilot! The bike does what it wants to... modern bikes with 10” bars don’t allow you to easily vert, they are park bikes now. No one makes vert bikes! Glad I still have a couple subverts from my sponsored B3 days.. yes I rode with the legends elbow to elbow up on the deck waiting to drop in!

One of the first guys to understand geometry of his bike ..I think his CS was like 12.5. Crazy when average was 14.5 in 1998..

I was going to comment on that alleyoop icepick grind, but man those runs are so burly and smooth it just gets more and more memorable. True legend, it's incredible watching Jay's riding. Landing front tire on coping each hit

I love how back in the 90s flatland routine's were kind of incorporated into street and very runs ( on the deck ) jay was a COMPLETE freestyle bmx rider in every sense of the word.

Actually, if this was late 98, the first would be a bit earlier. 1998 x-games, San Diego. Jay missed 97 due to an injury incurred riding at Sheep Hills, which I also witnessed. A year later, pro vert is stacked, intense and Jay is back. During a live commercial break between all the rider's runs, to stay warm, to say the least, Jay dropped in... 6ft air, then an 8ish, then bam, a absolutely perfect 5-whip landed with nose down and smooth as f#ck. Don't think he tried one during his actual runs, as I am sure we'd know but this went down...!
