My dad discovered grilling late in life. Started out with burgers and hot dogs, then tried to expand into chicken. His first attempt involved making tray out of tinfoil so there wouldn't be any dripping or bits falling off. Well, that worked until enough melted fat collected to rip through the tinfoil. I only heard the *"WOOSH,"* but one of my little sisters was out with him and said it created a Biblical pillar of fire. Dad almost immediately came in to announce that that chicken was done. He also moved the grill a little further away from the house after that.

I think the little shadow was the joy of life, playfullness and curiosity. The boy was best friends with it as a kid, then less and less, and lost it completely at the lowest point of his adult life. The shadow frog eventually joined other detached shadows, just as lost as himself. Reminds us to pause sometimes, and let the joy back in.
