Honestly it's perfectly possible, if somewhat antithetical to the point of the language. You'd have to start being very rigid with the noun phrases, laying out specific definitions either by specifying their translations or giving a verbose explanation in a glossary. This sort of defeats the idea of simplifying thought and you would also find that you'd be forced to move away from the definitions of the words as laid down in The Language of Good. Your beginner toki pona speaker wouldn't then be able to work out what your noun phrases referred to.

I feel like this is completely contradictory. Like, I get that the idea is minimalism, but with so few words, you end up the other way around, forced to complecate things way to much just to discribe the simplest of things. If you need some whole sentences just to be barely understood by someone, that's not minimalism, you're just making your life a lot harder than it should be really
@xristoforosstefatos72492 жыл бұрын
Sorry for some mistakes I made, English is not my native language :)
@ova56832 жыл бұрын
Okay i see where you're coming from. Having to explain stuff more can be more time consuming and harder. The idea, in my opinion, is what if you didn't have to explain everything in detail? Rather think and speak in larger concepts and generalizations thus making the perception of your world simpler. The language forces you to think in ground concepts and what is really important and essential qualities of a given thing. Also makes it really difficult to lie and twist things. And i don't think it was meant to be conversational, or useful (in any other field than philosophy and fun), and definitely not practical. Forgive my rant, i just like this thing a lot
@xristoforosstefatos72492 жыл бұрын
@@ova5683 Yeah but unfortunately we live in a real world thus more complex concepts are not extras, they are essentials. But yeah, as for the core idea of this language, I get it, but I believe I can try to sum up my thoughts and try to be more consistent in my native language or my second language thanks😁
@dozyote2 жыл бұрын
I think this is everyone's first reaction but when you see how the language is actually used, the issue largely goes away. In practice, theme of the language is not necessarily to communicate with as few words as possible, but to communicate with as little information as possible, or with only what information is relevant, which is a pretty huge difference. For example, if you and I were talking about bananas, I wouldn't need to tell you that they are an "edible long yellow soft sweet tropical fruit with a thick peel". I know that you know what a banana is already, so I could just call it "that long fruit", and you would have a pretty good shot at knowing exactly what I'm talking about without the word "banana" ever being spoken. Similarly, a Toki Pona speaker would simply say kili palisa (literally "stick fruit"), or just kili, or even moku ("edible thing") depending on context. If they needed to be more specific, then specificity can be added, but it's not there default. In English, we have a tendency to overdescribe things and scenarios without regard for the shared, implicit knowledge of the people we're speaking to, and it can be hard to walk that back into the mentality that Toki Pona requires. Contrary to what you may initially think, you often don't need a whole sentence to describe something, only a few choice words, and that goes for both Toki Pona and English :)
@drivers998 ай бұрын
That applies to talking when you’re learning any language, and applies to normal speech in any language because we don’t have term for every possible concept, and when we forget the words for things. There’s a term for that type of speaking but I forgot it (perfect example! lol). Let me Google it. Found it: circumlocution
