I was reading about this pope and it said he was from Rome and was from a family with ties to the black nobility. I tried to understand, but I couldn’t really grasp it. What is the black nobility? Do they still exist?
@impressivethings58516 ай бұрын
The term generally indicates the aristocracy nominated by the Popes over the centuries. Nevertheless, it came into use after the French invasion of Rome and the kidnapping of Pope Pius VII by Napoleon's army, when many Roman aristocrats refused to obey the French Emperor and declarated themselves faithful to the Pope. Subsequently, "black nobility" was largely used after the fall of the Papal States in 1870. After that event, part of the Roman aristocracy accepted the rule of the King of Italy and the Italian royal dinasty of Savoia, while others aristocrats remained faithful to the Pope. This part of the Roman aristocracy was named "black nobility", also because they often showed themselves in mourning for the Pontiff, whom they considered a hostage of the King of Italy. In fact, Pius XII's ancestors belonged to this nobility and were at the service of the Holy See for generations. Irony of the history: the Pope's brother, Francesco Pacelli, who was a lawyer, took part in the 1929 concordat ("Patti Lateranensi"), the treaty which put an end to the conflict between the Pope and the Kingdom of Italy (the Pope recognized the Italian State and the State recognized the sovereignty of the Pope over the Vatican City).

@@impressivethings5851 Thank you so much for taking your time to respond and type out that explanation. I really never knew any of that, but you really explained it so well. So it seems that it was a huge honor to have someone of his caliber as the Holy Father, and maybe explains why he was so important and great. Do they still exist at all? Are there any cardinals or archbishops or anyone high within the church or even living in Rome that may still have this lineage and these ties? What about archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano? I hope that the black nobility didn’t fade away, but maybe it’s not really that important anymore? Anyway, thank you again! I find this so interesting.

@@lisaturtle13The Papal Court already existing during the Middle Age, was officially established by Pope Sixtus V at the end of the 16th century. The Court was a very large and complex organization, totally at the service of the Pope, where many Roman noblemen had key roles in its several branches ("Noble Guards", "Sediari", "Gentiluomini di Cappa", etc.). The Court was officially dissolved by Paul VI in 1968, but many Roman aristocrats continued to serve the Pope in the administration of the Sacred Palaces and of the Vatican State. A number of Roman noblemen still work today in some religious institutions related to the Holy See.

@@impressivethings5851 Wow, so interesting. I am really glad to learn about this and know that there are still some that serve and are around. I wonder why Pope Paul VI disbanded it? Italy and the Vatican have such a rich history. I am hoping to learn more , and you have greatly contributed to this process so thank you again.
