I am so pleased that you have looked into Pierre Robitailles great work! Many assumptions from the "giants" are probably doomed and ready for correction. Happy new year to you as well!

Not sure where this is going. My independent research will be for a cup of coffee till next episode.

Good work. I now know a little bit more, and a whole lot less. Such is life.

Thank you for this. Clearly, the science is not settled; we all have much more to learn about climate. Those who claim that they understand climate science, don't really understand climate science.

Upwelling and downwelling IR values used in the Trenberth model seem to be simply derived from applying Planck to the surface temp and the emission level temp, completely ignoring the energy removed by collision and evapotranspiration. I don't understand how they get away with this.

a molecule will undergo many billions of collisions per second in the troposphere before it gets a chance to reradiate IR, a co2 collision will transfer that energy to a nitrogen or oxygen molecule, this effectively rules out IR re-radiation as a mechanism of heat transport in the lower atmosphere. downwelling radiation can only occur where the atmosphere thins and collisions fall to about one per second, which is well above the clouds. I don't see how any downwelling radiation can find its way back to the surface. maybe it warms the top of the clouds a bit. trenberth diagram seems absurd to me, but he has a special hat and I don't.
