Everything I hear by Martinu is pure gold. What a genius. What a giant among 20th century composers.

My response to listening is simple. I liked it. I found myself wishing for another 5 minutes or so.

One of the most attractive works of Martinu. He was gereatly inspired by the frescos of Piero delle Francesca in Arezzo. His main inspiration is the meeting of King Salomon and queen of Saba, and Dream of Emperor Constantin. The rather large orchestra (four flutes) is often used in a very glittring way, showing that Martinu developed his own language also in the domain of orchestration. The work was created by the Vienna Orchestra Kubelik on August 26, 1956.

I think it would be accurate to say that in the domain of orchestration Martinu was one of the 20th c. masters.

Kubelik gave the premiere of the work two years earlier in Salzburg with the Wiener Philharmoniker (the recording has been published by Orfeo). And, by the way, "Fresques", not "Fresque".

The title is "Les Fresques della Piero della Francesca." The plural of "fresque" has a final "s" that is not pronounced in French.
