Meanwhile.....back in China, a factory owner is smiling and rubbing his dirty little hands together thinking "Thanks Dave!"

Then that little factory owner in china laughs all the way to the electrical engineer responsible for the design, and realizes Dave just bypassed a failsafe specifically designed to reduce the amount of strain on the cheap motor and possibly increase the overall run time on the battery.

Recently purchase Uberscoot ES04 300, which came with chain drive and 250W motor, lead acid 24v battery supply (2x12V) and a 24V controller. Just installed a 350W 24v motor, and it required no modifications (just fit). Reused the motor power plug as the metal connector contacts were already on the wires of the new motor. Just had to remove the plug from the old motor and extract the old contact leads from the plastic plug (clipped internal stops on the old metal contacts were easy to depress with a small screw driver in order to extract them). Then I simply inserted the new contact leads into the plastic-housing plug. Note: matched the colors of the vertical and horizontal contact leads within the plastic plug so that the motor direction is kept the same. This has already dramatically improved the hill climbing torque of this well made scooter. I used heat shrink before inserting the lead contacts to avoid shorts and better moisture proof connections (did this for the whole length up to the motor housing. Also, I added some hot glue to the backside of the plug for reinforcement. Next up...replace the lead acid batteries with 12000 MAh Li-ion branded battery pack with a BMS as part of the battery unit. I am staying with 24V...I do not want a speed demon for me or the kids. Just a better hill climber. In addition, to upgrade the controller to 24V 500W. This should better handle peak power demands with the Li-ion pack. Lastly, keeping the rear sprocket the same...no change other than adding some marine grease. Again, no need for more speed on my part here. It all fits like a champ. Battery unit was about $70, controller about $20, and the motor about $50. Scooter originally cost me $250 new, so all in I have a decent and legal scooter for just under $400, with a good range.

This is called a shunt mod. You shouldn’t do this a sit will completely remove all current limits on the controller. You will blow the mosfet once too many amps are drawn. Better mod is to add solder to the shunt on top the board, so only increase the currently flow and not make it unlimited

I’ve seen a lot of these shunt videos but what I want to add is that before you do anything. Measure the resistance in ohms across the shunt. That way you have a way to measure how much solder to add. If you double the resistance for example, you should get double the speed or max controller speed whichever is greater.
@mistersunny3636
@mistersunny3636 2 жыл бұрын
I guess you have to lower the resistance to increase power. And one should know how to measure a few milliohms. Also speed is always voltage dependend, not amps.

No, you need to modify the circuit heavily. It uses TL494 PWM controller that you need to pull a datasheet of and see how to control the speed in regards to this particular design. Direct wiring a pot across a shunt isn't going to work.

Some of your comments I can't reply too. Depending on the thickness of the wire it can increase the speed by 2-5 mph. The thicker the wire the faster. That also means it could cause your motor to overheat or your processor board to burn up. It is the size it is because of the safety of the equipment.

I'd say your best bet at extending your range is to reduce friction to a minimum. Make sure your bearings are not rusty, properly greased, etc... same goes for the chain (which tends to gather dust and dirt). Also, if your wheels are not solid (ie. there's air inside), make sure the pressure is right. If they are solid, I'd try and fit the thinnest ones available (the smaller the ground contact, the smaller the friction). Finally, when you start from a 0 speed position, give the first push "the old fashion way". This saves the motor from having to "start the motion" (which uses a lot more power than just maintaining the speed).

didnt see any comment actually explaining why, so here is what is going on. That wire is not a current limiter, its a current sensor. Dont cut it, leave it there and add the other wire as well. This works because it tricks the controller. The resistance is now lower, and the controller measures the current incorrectly and thinks its allowed to pump in more the current. Making the wire bigger than a paperclip is probably not necessary. In fact the paper clip is probably more than necessary. The controller is likely already running at about 80% duty cycle to hold full speed so you just need to divert about 20% of the current around the original shunt to get 100% duty cycle out of the controller. Im just guessing those percentages from experience, I could be wrong. Now remember, the manufacturer programmed that exact current limit for a reason. Its not like they just didnt want you to have fun. They know that past that limit, stuff starts getting unsafe. By all means do the mod, but remember that full throttle is now a turbo mode that should be used lightly. If the motor, speed controller, and batteries are cool to the touch, keep pushing it. If they get hot, back off a bit.
@robertreid3806
@robertreid3806 3 ай бұрын
"So the controller sees half the current" [through the original shunt wire]. Er no! The controller cannot measure the two currents through the original shunt and your new one separately. The controller just 'sees' a single electrical path from A to B. But now that path has a marginally lower resistance. This change opens the gate in the mosfet slightly more, allowing greater current to the electric motors, thus feeding them more juice and making you go faster. One thing to remember is that the manufacturer would have selected the mosfet for the original design current value. So any big increase risks exceeding the mosfet's rating and it will overheat and fail in a couple of seconds. Solution? Increase the mosfet's heatsink size to disperse more heat (small improvement), or way way better: swap out the mosfet for a higher rated one and bolt it to a big heatsink! Personally, I'd accept a modest improvement in speed (by using a thin extra shunt) and retain some of the original reliability.

I have to say, duct taping a paper clip across the circuit board is definitely NOT a good method. Soldering a small gauge wire 'jumper', similar to the same gauge as the original jumper, across the same contact points on the board is how it should be done. Best to use an insulated piece of wire and soldered to the circuit board. It sounds like some of the responders have actually tried the paper clip and duct tape method, or simply wired to the wrong contact points. As for enabling or disabling the extra current carrying capability, one could install a S.P.S.T. (single-pole, single throw) toggle switch on the outside of the battery compartment (close to the controller board) and soldering short 26 or 24 gauge wires to the two contact points on the board. Then you could have the increased torque with the switch in the ON (closed) position when you need to go up an incline, and switch OFF for riding on level terrain. I just acquired a (free) used E300 and started to refurbish it. Someone left it sit outside for a long time, as all the screws were badly rusted, as well as the chain ... I had to drill out the screws. I've already purchased a new chain and two new batteries. The motor, tested out fine, but the throttle control does not want power it up ... need to troubleshoot the throttle and brake controls and wiring next. If the controller still works, I'll try the mod and add the toggle switch to provide the current increase, and hopefully, have the best of both worlds ...

I am not familiar with the scooter board but the shunt must be a current to voltage to the processor. So if you add another resistor in paralel you will fake the processors feedback regulator and it will not work propperly. I do not know where this meal jumper is on the electrical schematic. If it is on the battery it is a protection not to destroy the battery from overcurrents if it is on motor is acurrent sensor.

I believe the idea is to increase the current path by making it thicker essentially although he is talking about bypassing it altogether it sounds like. Beefing up the existing trace with solder would be a more reliable mod as his method will most likely pop the mosfets on the PCB at some point from too much current.

Awesome dude.. i guess this must also be the case with my mobility scooter.. going to try it out soon, if i can make it go faster like this, it would be sick.

Doesn't work on mobility scooters they have a anti mod system so if you mod it it simply won't drive at all

Dude i was thinking like.. there is a turn knob that you can regulate the speed with (from snail to rabbit or whatever) - I was thinking that when you turn this knob, it somehow gets a better connection on the wires, and therefore, if i took this apart and hooked them up directly, then i might gain a small amount of speed? or am i wrong? i have now really looked into it yet..

Kennie Diamond yea I was also thinking the same but no the resistor is at full when turned to the rabbit its like turning a tab open (if you have one of those water tabs that use a turning knob)

Yeah okay thanks man.. i did not know that.. was acturally trying to try it out tomorrow ;P i guess i have to do something else.. you cant tell me there is no way, there must be a way.. a new motor? a extra battery? maby rewiring it very simply (i never really done this shit before, so i would need knowledge beforehand) - But rewire it so that there goes a cable from the battery to the stearing handle - When its pressed down, it sends power through a cable, and into something that regulates the current or whatever, and then straight to the motor? is it possible? i dont care spending some money on the project..

not glue , it has to be an electric conductor like solder . It's call removing the limiter because it will no longer limit the current going to your motor. Like a fuse to protect, to keep it from burning up.
