I intend to take £20000 per year until I hit the 25 percent. Pay that £20000 into a stocks and shares isa every year. Once it's in my isa it's protected from capital gains as well as never having to pay the initial tax on it. Leave that money in the isa to grow and add it to my income when I retire tax free.

Chris, the clearest explanation I have seen so far. I turn 55 this year and have been exploring taking a tax-free lump sum from one or more of my plans. Two of my plans are not available any more, Scottish Widows - With Profits Unitised so I have been told they will need to be crystalised and I will have to take the full 25% tax-free from both and not a fixed amount. They'll then be moved to a single drawdown plan. That's to be confirmed when I speak to their pensions expert on the next call.

You really need your pension for after you have retired so only take extra money out of the pension if you really need to and are willing to have less money to live off later. In the UK the state pension is paid late sixties dependant on your current age. When you get it any tax due actually comes off your main work pension if you have one.

Great video on what is a complex matter. FYI, taking income using UFPLS will also trigger the £4,000 money purchase annual allowance, and is mistake lots make. Don't dip unto your pension pot to help with the cost of living crisis until you understand the potential tax issues that are caused by the MPAA. The £4000 limit includes employer pension contributions, not just your own.
@chrisbourne-retirementplanner Жыл бұрын
Spot on Iain, accessing taxable benefits using any flexible withdrawal method (UFPLS or flexi-access drawdown) will trigger the MPAA.

Brilliant explanations of stuff I was struggling to get my head round
@simonsackett3 жыл бұрын
I'm sure what most people want is for someone to tell them what they personally could or should do with their pension(s) in the simplest terms. If you haven't just got a simple pension pot it makes things very complicated. I've got about 10k from when I contracted out of SERPS, more with a company I worked for 25 years ago, a closed pension pot with my current employer, and a smaller amount in the new pension plan they started! I could take some now but I've no idea what to take.
@chrisbourne-retirementplanner3 жыл бұрын
Hi Simon. Well the pension that you and your employer are contributing to would be best remaining in situ. Generally speaking, smaller pots (less than £10k) are better to take first if you want to utilise for income because they do not trigger the MPAA (reduced annual allowance for contributions) or use any of your Lifetime Allowance.
@simonsackett3 жыл бұрын
@@chrisbourne-retirementplanner Thank you very much for replying! So if someone ends up with a few pensions scattered around are they not all considered to be one pot by the tax man?
@chrisbourne-retirementplanner3 жыл бұрын
@@simonsackett No not necessarily Simon... pots worth under £10k are considered 'small pots' and you can take up to three of these out as cash payments (25% tax free, the remainder taxable) without them impacting your annual allowance and lifetime allowance.

Thank you! With DB pensions you'll find that your Personal Allowance is used up (at least in part) by that, so it's not possible to be quite as tax efficient. It is still possible however to just use tax free lump sum (no income withdrawals) to supplement the DB income until all lump sum has been taken.
@chrismoore7569 Жыл бұрын
Thank you very well explained. The examples used all assume growth in funds retained in pension. In a zero growth scenario all options would be identical from a tax perspective. In a loss scenario the tax free cash would be less. Have I understood this correctly, Thank you.

@chrisbourne-retirementplanner2 жыл бұрын
Hi Glyn. There isn’t a right or wrong answer to this question as it depends on your own circumstances. Generally speaking, leaving your pension alone and letting it grow for as long as possible is a good thing to do. Taking the tax free lump sum on a monthly basis also allows for a more tax efficient income. It’s important to keep an eye on interest rate movements though and how much your mortgage is costing in relation to how much your pension is growing.

Hi chris very informative video however in your analogy you am I correct in saying you have assumed that the uncrystalised pot has grown by 25% this would take quite some time to grow by that amount therefore I dont believethis to be an vernight increase of 30% against 25% tax free amount but admitably better but not the amount in the used in the video
@chrisbourne-retirementplanner Жыл бұрын
Hi Robert. Yes those were just example figures, and that kind of growth wouldn’t be achieved overnight like you say. It’s only to show how the mechanics work really.

Chris. Great video. Think you should have pointed out what happens to your pension fund when you die. Eg if you take the annuity option you lose all the money when you die, nothing for your heirs. Quite critical I suggest when making your initial choice.
@chrisbourne-retirementplanner Жыл бұрын
Hi David. There are value protection and guaranteed payment options that can be added to annuities, but this video focused more on flexible income options and how to maximise tax free lump sum.

Wow, my heads spinning but I'm sure I will understand it after another watch, I thought like most people 25% was the maximum I could take tax free but no one had ever explained the term crystallisation to me before or how it works.

Glad it’s useful Nigel thanks for watching.

The assumptions assume the pot grows. If it falls the amount of the tax free cash will fall with it and so you would end up with less than 25% of the initial notional value. Good video apart from missing that if.

Thanks, very useful information. Would you know how to locate lost pensions..?

Hi there. Yes Pension Bee offer this service I believe, but if you typed that enquiry into Google there is also a Gov.uk page that can help with this.

Was wondering where the 25% ends - if I took half the tax free lump sum as it stands, would the remainder create more tax free lump sum? And here you are - explaining very well the answer I needed! Thank you ever so much for taking time to do this for us. Very best of luck to you!

Hi Chris, I guess there will now be a record of tfc taken and only able to take the maximum fixed amount now. They remove complexity and add it back in.

Wow. Brilliant, I don't totally get it but can understand the options potential. I probably need to watch it a few times. Never knew this was possible. We are hoping to retire in 5 years and need to drawn income from various sources, including pensions for the period until our state pensions kick in. So this was very helpful.

Very interesting thanks one to watch again. One thing i wondered was do i still pay national insurance on all monies taken (£12:500 probably per year) from retiring at 55 until 67? So 12 years thanks
@chrisbourne-retirementplanner10 ай бұрын
Thank you. National insurance is not paid on pension income.

How do I crystallise my remaking pension in a self managed SIPP of stocks and shares though?
@chrisbourne-retirementplanner6 күн бұрын
Providing the SIPP offers all of the options outlined then the same principles apply. If unsure though you must seek advice.

Chris, I have to say thank you so much. Having watched other videos on this topic and I couldn’t get my head around. Yours is clear and simple. I understood it straight up. My question is: what if my pension pot is £100k and I need £15k then 2 years later £10k? How will that work with your example?
@chrisbourne-retirementplanner Жыл бұрын
Hello Guy. Apologies for the delay I seem to have missed this one! To release £15k of tax free lump sum you would need to crystallise £60k of your pension pot. To then release £10k lump sum afterwards, you would need to crystallise £40k of your pot. Your pot may have grown to more than £40k by this time (although not guaranteed), so you could either take more lump sum at that time or later.

Thanks Chris, excellent explanation, I triggered MPAA in 2015 by taking 25% that was taxed, I actually wanted it all as the tax free option but I didn't appreciate the MPAA aspect and let it go Too late now of course. Expensive mistake !! I've been told by Pension Wise I can still have 25% tax free lump sum anytime I like, so that's something at least
@chrisbourne-retirementplanner Жыл бұрын
Hi Tony. Ah yes that’s a painful one that I’ve seen happen before. There should be better warnings to people if they are doing things with providers directly.

@@chrisbourne-retirementplanner thanks Chris, I cheer myself up with the thought that I used it as a deposit for a buy-to-let flat which was £133k in 2016, and is now £180k, plus a little rental surplus income along the way, a small crumb of comfort. What you lose on the swings, you gain on the roundabouts 😀
