930 bhp? Damn, that's a hell load for 1929! the look of the car and just the figures would of mindblown you that long ago.

how do people measure, or even know horsepower numbers from an engine back then?

My father was allowed the honour of sitting in the Golden Arrow at the KLG Spark Plugs, works at Putney Vale aged 14. I have a photo of him and other Co-workers standing around this famous car.

tonymeg1 I will hunt it out... it is actually in the history of KLG book, brought out, in (I think, ) 1989. When I get hold of it, I will get it scanned and send it to you somehow.

Very Interesting post. I have a KLG lapel-pin. A beautiful miniature Spark-Plug. I remember the first time I rounded a corner at Beaulieu and saw 'The Golden Arrow', I was staggered by how fast she looked whilst stationary! I seem to remember being told that she has not had a motor for some time?

This is one of the most exciting films in the Duke vaults - Major Segrave's 1929 World's Land Speed Record run. Features trial run footage, including aerial, car-to-car and even onboard camera work. Warning: It does also include film of Lee Bible's ill-fated run in the White Triplex which some viewers may find disturbing

At 13:30 you can see Lee Bibles wife run up to her husbands dead body. She almost faints when she first sees him and is helped away by others. Very sad.

Segrave's opinion was that oil on Triplex's accelerator pedal had caused Bible's foot to slip off, the instant drag on the back wheels throwing the car out of control like slamming on the handbrake. This accident decided Segrave to give up land for water, unfortunately a log overturned his boat at 120 mph (est) resulting in his death from internal injuries. RIP both brave men.

Tony Curr Perhaps it was technically wrong decision trying to set a speed record on loose sand.

also the beach was closed after for record attempts so that was that. less than 40 miles on the clock, golden arrow retired. I have read that the car was designed for "up to" 270 mph and the tyres had a maximum of 250, so he could have gone quicker if he had been able to run some more.

Ok I have built a few cars, and I know a bit about Art Deco, and my job is making and restoring beautiful things out of metal, so when I literally bumped into this car at Beaulieu in the 90's I honestly had to wipe away a tear... Not because of me knocking my knee, it is just that the sheer scale and beauty of this metal object is absolutely breath-taking. I would have loved to see her breathing fire in anger. Menacing and beautiful... exactly how I like my women! 😂 BRAVO Major Henry Segrave. 🏆

When I was a kid I used to play with the original engineers models of the Golden Arrow and 1000hp Sunbeam at the KLG factory where my dad worked. Wonder what they are worth?

The bow tie is a classic piece of style. Calculating for inflation that car would cost just over a million pounds of today's money, land speed records are a serious business.

231 mph. Thats faster than some supercars today. But now hypercars like Koenigsegg can reach 270mph 280mph and soon Hennessey Venom F5 300mph.
