Regarding Notre Dame: The roof structure of Cologne Cathedral was built in the 19th century with modern steel beams, although the original plans from the Middle Ages called for wooden beams. I think wood is more beautiful than steel. But if a single cigarette can cause more damage than a world war, I would rather build with steel than with wood.

St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna had also a huge medieval wooden roof construction that caused enormous damage when it burned during the battle in 1945. Compared to that, Notre Dame was slightly damaged. Since the reconstruction, there is a concrete plate with steel beams, and we hope it will not burn in the next centuries.

But as for Saudi Arabia...can I watch porn while drinking a beer and let my unaccompanied 16 year old daughter run down to the store to buy tampons without a chaperone? There are more ways to measure safety than just by whether someone is too scared to steal my stuff that I left sitting outside for some insane reason.

i looked up the sea wall and learned that its a collaboration between indonesia and SEVERAL dutch companies that are specialized in these kind of projects ( a true dutch tradition) it makes me feel all sort of feels actually as a dutch person with indonesian ancestory (my dad being the last of us born over there before they moved across the world in the 60s) it makes feel proud to know that this is a collaboration, im ofcourse not completley in the know of its nature. BUT it feels symbolic. and im excited to visit this project when i finally get to visit indonesia (which is probably YEARS in the future haha)

I suspect that the vaguery behind the Woven City announcement may have a lot to do with the fact that it is a laboratory. It will be continuously redesigned, invented, reinvented and whatever over its life. Nobody knows what it will look like by the end of initial construction, much less a few years/decades in the future. It's a playground for the Engineer and Technology Development residents.

The Saudi project featured prominently in one of Simon's earlier videos (IIRC, on one of his other channels), of gargantuan projects headed for disaster for being completely unworkable. Sindala may be the only part of it to actually get finished. I did notice there was no mention of the environmental effect of any of these projects, for the good and simple reason that they are all ecological disasters.

I used to work in a lot of old churches. It was amazing that the keepers of these structures eternally lived under the delusion that the buildings were actually old. The Victorians did a lot of restoration and modernising, which is most of the reason a lot of them still exist, but it never stopped people pointing at bits as if they'd be made by Jebus himself.

there was never a partially built tower where Ciel tower is now.....in fact it has nothing to do with the 08 financial crisis. as a project for the plot wasnt considered till after the 2013/14 UAE financial crisis. the one thing that is partially true is that it started out being designed as a slightly smaller residential tower and the foundation was dug out and the piles put into place and then that was it! it was then that the plan was changed and then new piles had to be created before the Ciel could rise out of the ground.

1:50 Sounds like North Cronulla Surf Lifesaving Club. Each part of the building had been modified / reconstructed / extended several times in it's existence of less than 100 years, with each addition done cheaper and looking more hideous than the last. The whole place was unsafe and about to collapse. For around a million dollars and 2 years work, the new building would respectfully keep some of the old appearance. Unfortunately, work was stopped as the dozens of different crumbling parts had to be recreated from scratch because of the "historic significance" of the emergency repairs done as recently as 15 years ago. Several million dollars and as many years later, it's still not finished. They learned nothing from the South Cronulla Club rebuild about 8 years ago.

Jakarta invested the equivalent of around 5 months of Germany's health insurance fees everyone has to pay by law to build an entire city, and the western governments claim they have issues finding money to build schools and hospitals. Around 42 million in employment paying around €170 (minimum) each per month. Do the maths ;)

But the compression on your voice makes your breath stand out and it makes it sound so artificial. Compressing your voice like you are doing is annoying on a 16 minute show. or even a five minute show. we use it for radio and TV commercials to make the commercials stand out and to be annoying. so I would like to suggest getting back to some more natural audio like the advertisement you did. Around 3:25 time code, for ground news. that sounds more natural. Yes a massive compressor can make you sound more sexy but dude you’ve got that going on in spades. You don’t need the compressor. That hotel is just going to be a giant money sinkhole that looks good. There just isn't enough Dubai tourists in need of a hotel to fill 1/4 of it during the busiest season if the top 5 hotels closed. if all hotels were booked to capacity there would be a huge amount of reasonably sized hotels being built. There is no boon in hotel construction and there is plenty of vacancies in the largest hotels during the busiest seasons. Just another waste of oil money they don't know what to do with and just want Dubai to look wealthy through wasteful useless projects. Kinda curious how they will fill the hotel, are they going to dump everyone on a different floor and opposite side of the building so they cannot hear their neighbors even if they hire a rock band to do a concert with concert speakers in their room? Or will they dump the majority on the first 3 floors and the minority on the top 3.

The Saudis would be better served by building massive solar farms and sell clean electricity to their neighbors. Then when they have excess energy use it to pump sea water into the desert to change their ecosystem and also create hydroelectric batteries in reservoirs. Tourism is only going to get them so much and it differs with their conservative culture.
