it's important to note that mikasa also said those words to eren when he was probably at his lowest in the show (indicated by him saying I still can't do a thing mom), those words by mikasa was not only a love confession but something to motivate him as well. In the the end both confessed to each other indirectly

I always loved that. When I first saw that scene, it struck me that Eren said "now and forever" - he really isn't someone who says he'll do something with little to no thought. It was indirect but somehow pretty damn forward now that I think about it and his character as a whole.

Another important point on Hannes is that his death (rather ironically) justifies his decision back in season 1, for all those who were still hating on him for it. This episode proved, once and for all, that Hannes wouldn't have been able to kill that Titan back then, meaning that his perceived cowardice actually saved the lives of Eren & Mikasa, who both would have almost certainly died without his help. It just goes to show that reckless courage isn't always the correct choice, and that's one of the things that this series is very good at displaying in excruciating fashion - that the hero doesn't always win the day. And sadly, there aren't too many anime shows out there mature enough to take such a harsh yet accurate stance on things...

it's a very real show in that regard, not everyone can do heroic things, even if they have the will. There are so many reactors that I turned off that couldn't get that in this show, there are just people. regular people trying their best to do the right thing even when they don't have the means, not everyone is a superhero. This is a massive misconception, especially of non anime watchers thinking that just because it's animation every character can do fantastical things.

Hannes' death at the hands of that Titan - gave him closure & clear his guilt of choosing to not fight it in Ep1. It showed that he would have died, so his choice is forgiven by himself, coz his decision ended up saving Eren, Mikasa in Ep1. If had killed that Titan here, he would have had the guilt that he didn't rescue Carla, out of just cowardliness.

Mikasa would kiss Eren for a goodbye, she accepted they both were going to die there, that's why Eren rejected it. He was willing to fight unarmed a titan in order to survive and save her. That's the anime protagonists for you, even when the situation is the worst they never give up, this is so beautiful.

This one really emphasizes the presence of these purple flowers that are always around Eren and Mikasa, representing their relationship. (You might've noticed sometimes animation frames focus on them) They are BlueBells: known to symbolize everlasting love, and gratitude. It fits their scene so much... Mikasa thought it was their last moment together and just wanted to let him know how much she loves him and how thankful she is for him making her world beautiful, but Eren refused to give up, stood up and answered her feelings by promising her he would always wrap the scarf around her, and for that they must fight, and live. And then got his strengh back and protected her by bare punching the titan. It's one of my favorite scenes ever, god, but it's easily misunderstood as Eren not caring or getting her feelings, when it's totally the opposite! Tbh his words alone speaks a marriage vow for her, and the scarf just feels like an engagement ring analogy... Mikasa has such a subtle development here, as she was always taking it on herself to protect Eren, but seeing him at his lowest, crying about not being able to change and protect anyone, is making her realize how she needs to give him that autonomy and self esteem as an individual back, that he is much more than he thinks. You will see how from here on she is not asking him to depend on just her

I'm so glad you had a discussion about the Eren Mikasa scene. I love that scene, but I've watched a few other reactions and nobody really notices apart from a few words about how they think Eren fumbles it. But they're actually pretty young at this point. I just think Eren's an action man. He doesn't get touchy freely stuff. To him saving Mikasa and trying his hardest shows he cares. Even instead of saying I love you or care about you, he uses a practical metaphor of wrapping the scarf. It seems a bit old fashioned doesn't it - the way he is, not scarf wrapping lol
