I am fascinated by your coverage of India. I am 71 and was born into a Hindu family in Calcutta (Kolkata) and still live here. Until I was in about my mid-forties I had several Jewish friends including at school. My only daughter studied at and graduated from the Jewish Girls School in Kolkata. The first Jew to settle in Kolkata, not India, was Shalon Aharon Obadiah Cohen who came in 1798 from Syria. Kolkata still has five synagogues: Maghen Aboth, Maghen David, Neveh Shalom, Beth El and Shaare Rasoon. I don't have direct knowledge but have heard and read that the upkeep and maintenance of one of these synagogues has been done for several generations by one muslim family; I understand without any compensation. This in itself, in my opinion, is the most extraordinary story in a world with so much hatred. I went to a Catholic boarding school in the lower Himalayas and most interestingly, the oldest living ex-student of my school is an elderly Jewish man from Kolkata who now lives in Israel. I met him some years ago when he visited a relative in Kolkata. If any of my knowledge of the Jewish people of Kolkata and how they so seamlessly integrated into this society are of interest to you, I shall most gladly share with you, if I know how. My apology for this large post.
