Today, we have an exciting project ahead: restoring this old meat cleaver. It looks like it has seen better days, but don't worry, we're going to restore it completely.
This meat cleaver was originally forged, giving it a unique history and quality. First, let's dismantle the old cleaver. The handle is completely eaten away by woodworms and unfortunately can't be salvaged. So, it has to go. However, the blade still has potential. I thoroughly sanded it down and then sandblasted it to remove rust and grime.
Next, I bluing the blade in four steps to prevent future rusting. Now it has a beautiful black/charcoal finish that not only looks great but also provides excellent protection.
Now onto the lathe. Here, I'm crafting caps for the new handle out of brass. Brass not only looks fantastic but is also very durable. The new wooden handle is made from Kingwood - a real standout! It's also created on the lathe and then rubbed with linseed oil varnish to protect and enhance its appearance.
Of course, precision milling is crucial. Everything needs to fit perfectly. A bit of concentration and a lot of patience are required.
Almost done! Now, let's put everything back together and ensure the meat cleaver feels good in the hand and is ready for use. It's always fascinating to see how restoration can transform an old, rusty tool into something beautiful and useful again.
That's it for today! I hope you enjoyed watching as much as I enjoyed restoring this meat cleaver. Don't forget to hit the like button and subscribe to my channel to catch all future projects. Until next time!

@@richardharepax123 either don't "blue" it. Or hot dip it (quenching) to make it black with vegetable or mineral oil.

Wow, impressive. And the handle is the crown glory of it all. I found a small cleaver that was sharpen by someone who knew nothing about doing so. It is lop sided. Doesn't cut straight down but curves on the way down.... all to say if you don't know how to do something ask.....

I hate to be "that person", I really do because it's your video and you can do whatever you please on your video on your channel. However, you were one of the few restoration channels that didn't do all the "fancy" transitions and different camera angles every 2.5 seconds and I greatly appreciated that. The multiple changes is angles so rapidly, and "fancy" transitions and edits give me anxiety for some reason 😓. Not telling you what to do, but I don't think you'll lose your audience by nixing the "fancy" edits and transitions. Either way great restoration! 😊

Оригинальная ручка была более эргономичной формы. Круглая ручка для таких увесистых инструментов - так себе вариант. Труднее контролировать инструмент при жёсткой работе. Эта же штука не помидоры резать. А так, конечно, красиво.

Hi... A little spoiled by this maintenance of the old chopper. The handle was salvageable, it was enough to harden, with a special chemical and there would be more of the original. Not a philosophy to make new ... But overall it came out OK. PS. Let's save the antiques...
