Incredible Rockefeller Mansion Exploration | East Cleveland, Ohio

Owner Sheila Sharpley gave me permission to film this historical Rockefeller mansion in East Cleveland, Ohio. This incredible mansion was home to Mary Ann Rockefeller Rudd and her husband William. Over the years vandals destroyed much of the property. As you will see scrappers removed the copper plumbing, making restoration difficult. The mansion was condemned when Sheila purchased the property nearly six years ago. Sheila expects the cost of repairs to be over $100,000. Her goal is to restore the Rockefeller home back to its former glory. I really hope you enjoyed this video. This is my favorite place so far. I can't wait to visit again. Thank you watching everyone.

Very nice, Dane. This is some of the only remaining parts of millionaires row. At one point in time nearly all of that portion of Euclid avenue was home to the rich and the famous as you may know. "Absolutely Stunning" is the words some newspapers of the time stated what millionaires row once was. Now it's getting run down and I am glad to see that someone is willing to restore this nearly lost part of history.

Wonderful explore, Dane! I’ve watched it a couple times. I hope the owner is able to restore this place. It’s so sad, I hate vandals that ruin things for no reason. There sure is a ton of history in Ohio. Underwood was an exceptional manual typewriter in its day. Thank you and stay safe.

Beautiful home. Must of been exquisite in it's prime. I loved the doorknobs and that claw foot tub was amazing. Yes do an overnight challenge that would be interesting to see, but take something with you for protection. Thank you for sharing this video

Very nicely done explore, you do excellent work. From the numbered rooms and that heavy screen door I would guess it was once an institution of some type. Possibly a home for the aged? The handles on that commode behind the screen are for someone with mobility issues.

14:44 CHIP is an incontenance pad/protection. It a cotton lined pad that is laid on the bed right where a persons butt area would go, to protect the bed from pee, etc. I don't remember exactly what the acronym stands for though. Cotton. ? .Incontence. Pad. There are many valuable items in these old houses. To keep losers from taking them, I won't name what they are. My great great grandparents lived in that area. Not on the row, but near. When my grandmother would go visit them, as a little girl, she had to dress in her finest Sunday clothes to even step foot in that side of town. She was born in 1902. Back then Cleveland was considered the Paris of the USA. Everyone, especially the wealthy, wanted to live in Cleveland. Companies wanted their businesses in Cleveland. People came from all over the country and world to see Cleveland. Crazy to think now, isnt it? Love your work, Dane. Thank you!

Shortly after you showed the door with the "hardware cloth" screens that you couldn't figure out, you talk about the woman having _cats._ There's your answer! Cats will climb screens (my Fur-friend tore holes in the plastic ones in my last apartment), just as they will climb hardware cloth screens, but they can't damage the heavier wire. Dane, Underwood was one of the premium brands of typewriters, along with Royal, Smith-Corona, and Brother. Aha, the thing you found in that little room (28:26) was an expansion tank for a hot water heating system. The furnace, with a water jacket inside, would've been in the basement. An electric pump moved the water throughout the house to the various radiators and any air in the system would go up to the tank, where the water would compress it. Hot water heat wasn't noisy like the steam heat.

That's a really nice house! It's in really great shape, considering that it hasn't been maintained in a long time. The reason that there are numbers on the doors, is because during WWII, a lot of the big mansions were turned into apartment buildings. I'd also bet that after WWII, this one in particular was turned into a Nursing Home... Which would explain the heavily screened door on that room in the attic. The room probably housed a person that suffered from Dementia and the door was meant to keep them safely inside. Although now we know that that's not a great way of doing things. The "help" that you heard when reviewing the footage could have very certainly been a residual spirit crying out. Anyhow... That really is a beautiful old home and it deserves some TLC... It'd make wonderful place to live. By the way... The Underwood typewriter was "THEE" typewriter to own, back in the day.

Nice video love old house Note: the answer to your question is it's an old turntable with out the part that turns the records on it. It was one of the last things you looked at on the third floor before basement you wonder what it was. That's what it looked like. I think it would be cool for you to stay the night but bring a friend no way I'd stay by myself! 😉😜

I always enjoy your videos, Dane. You're from Cleveland area, aren't you? I lived out there for a year nearly 30 years ago while I attended trade school in 93, 94. Lived on West Blvd, near Detroit and the RTA line. I think it's great to see a younger person interested in architecture, at least I'm sure you're younger than I am. Great video Dane. The thing on the top floor was a slide viewer but missing some parts. The glass doorknobs were beautiful. The chip drawer was where they kept Chip because they ran out of beds 😂 Will be a beautiful house once they get it finished. Where I live we have termites and the foundation would be gone if it was here and you probably couldn't save it. I hope the owner is able to secure the house to prevent anyone from getting in while she's restoring it. Can't wait for your next video.

23:33 Someone took the faucets from the tub. They were built into the tub back then, so they had to break the tub to get them off. That whole upstairs would have been for servants. I'm guessing the screened door was for ventilation. They could open the windows in that room to get the hot air out of that area and fresh cool air in.

That room could of been a place to hang laundry during winter or anytime. Screen door and open window would create a cross breeze. Yes, Underwood made quality typewriters. 😊 Thanks for the video.

Dane, Nice long video. Thank You. The heating suystem is most likely steam and the parts your calling elements don't have any electrical in them and that would make them steam radiators. It's not likely do to the age of the house but hot water could also be used with radiators.

I scrolled down to see if anyone---or how many!---would correct him. I'm surprised he did know, or is it because he's too young to have encountered them very often? Our second home, as I was growing up, was heated by hot water radiators and it was the most even heat I've ever experienced. In fact, until they decided that it wasn't efficient to have the unwrapped pipes in the basement and insulated them, I used to lie on the floor in our 14x22' (they'd eliminated the wall between the dining and living rooms), with my head against a hassock, watching TV.

@@seannot-telling9806 Yes, but you definitely didn't want to _sit_ on a radiator or you'd have fried ham! I worked in an office building in Hempstead, NY, which was comfortable all winter, but the boss rented another, smaller, 2-room office for storage and all you'd need was some water to turn it into a steam bath. After a few minutes in there, you'd want to wander around in the cool hallways for a while, fanning your arms.

I'd punch the big button on the hand dryer and direct it inside my jacket, then take off my mittens and blast their insides (nothing I could do about my backside).

The WW Co is a firebrick manufactured by the Robinson Clay Products Co of Strasburg, Ohio. The trademark was used from 1921 to 1942.

I went to school in Cleveland in the seventies and some of the old mansions were used as university buildings. One person I knew lived in an East Cleveland mansion that had been carved up into really squalid studios with one bathroom to each floor but as you walked through the front door there was this fantastic grand staircase leading up three stories. I lived near Lakeview Cemetery where Rockefeller and family are buried. They're on the highest hill with a giant obelisk with ROCKEFELLER on it. President Garfield is buried there too in a kind of medieval tower you used to be able to climb. Lots of neat things in Cleveland but no way in hell I'd ever move back.

Hi Dane, that room with the screen door, I'm wondering if there was a person who was not of a sane state of mind that was maybe kept just in that room because there was the commode chair in the room and also a wheelchair in the basement. Sorry I did some further digging, in the 60’s the home was bought by the children’s guild alliance for an adolescent girls home. Not sure when they closed the girls home down. Maybe they were mentally ill.

John D Rockefeller was one of the first oil tycoons. In the late 1800s Ohio was the nations leading oil producer.....There is still a little oil being pumped and not a little natural gas.

Some things are not safe to salvage. Lead and asbestos and other hazardous materials were used in a lot of old homes.

This was the residence of Rockefeller’s sister? The Rockefeller’s estate was in what is now Forest Hill Park in East Cleveland and Cleveland Heights. Nothing remains of Rockefeller’s home in Forest Hills.

Hi UD. What a great house! So many memories in there. But does it seem like for such rich people, a lot of the stuff (cabinets, lighting fixtures, toilets), were all shoddy? I mean, those cabinets in the kitchen were so awful. And the paint job around the mullions in those windows was so piss poor. Not what I expected from a Rockefeller home. And were those wooden ornamental pillars at the beginning of the video--were they part plaster? It looked like they were chipped off and white underneath, and real solid wood wouldn't look like that. The house did have some charming items--the glass doorknobs, the old skeleton key holes, the claw foot tubs, (a shame they were destroyed!). Overnight house challenge? YES YES YES!!!!!!!! Oh, and haha, jokes on me, but I can never, EVER, watch anyone's urban exploration videos while eating. But I thought, well, this IS UD's channel, and he's awesome...maybe I will sit here and eat this hot bowl of oatmeal and get through it, but NO, on HELL NO, just as I get a big blobbly mouthful of oatmeal, there on the floor is the dried blood and hold mother of god, the rotting carcass of a poor cat!
