The SPMT's shown here are Goldhofer's. There are several manufacturers making this type of unit including Scheuerle, Kamag, Cometto, Nicolas, and Anster and they all essentially the same in their construction and operation. For highway use they will frequently remove the power unit and pull them with a tractor unit. If the terrain is more demanding, they can be rigged up with a pusher pull setup using two tractors fore and aft. There are also SPT trailers that do not use hydraulics but linkages to control the unit.

The development by the engineers partly based on the customer specification and subsequently the realization of the project by logistics and executive crew is top notch. The many techniques that have to work 'together' in these types of projects and are put together into a coherent working system is a complex task. And perfectly realized. Chapeaux

The SPMT was invented in the early 1980s at Mammoet, a Dutch heavy haulage company. They created the concept and set the standard: modules with 4 or 6 axle lines and a width of 2.44 m so they could be transported in ISO containers. They commissioned Scheuerle to build the modules. Several companies these days build similar modules.

what happens in an event of failure...amazing doc
@zounds0102 жыл бұрын
If the power unit fails, there are locks in the hydraulic lines so the suspension doesn't collapse. The brakes are air-powered. These are built so that you need air pressure to release the brakes. When the system pressure drops below the threshold, the brakes are applied automatically. So in a failure you're stuck in place for a while until they can bring out a new power unit, but the load remains secure. Swap the power unit (or just attach the new power unit to the other side of the SPMT), and you're ready to go.

A fantastic machine , but driving by hydrolics seems a lot of work to construct, high pressure tanks and all that pipeing , posibility of leaks . I wonder if electric would be easier ,the powerpack would be a diesiel generator and an electric motor on each drive wheel.
@zounds0102 жыл бұрын
Mammoet/Scheuerle are experimenting with electric SPMTs. These use an electric power unit to drive hydraulic pumps, so the SPMT itself is still hydraulic. The biggest problem is the lifting system. This has to carry the weight of the load, and be compact enough to fit between the wheels of a wheel unit. Hydraulics are an excellent solution for providing a lot of lifting power in a small package. I'm not aware of electric solutions that could fit in there.
@johnland73182 жыл бұрын
Hydraulic motors are a smaller package. And the 400 Bar pressure forcing the action is easy to control to inch forwards. No gearing needed.

Way to bulky for the same output and space is of a premium in these units. Can you imagine the gearbox needed to perform the lifting action (consider the weight!), the motors needed to traverse (with reduction gearboxes!) or the motors and reduction gearboxes needed to steer it? No, hydraulic is way and above electrics.

It's mind blowing that one of these things move a few hundred tons, but the earlier stages of the Egyptian civilization were able to move single piece statues and obelisks in excess of 1000 tons. And we're supposed to believe they did it with teams of slaves pulling on ropes with the rock laid on top of logs.

We're not "supposed to believe" this, we did experiments that showed it's possible.

@@zounds010 ropes and logs work for 50 ton stones. Not 1000+ ton. There isn't wood anywhere on the planet that can sustain that load. World War III Has Begun; How It Unfolds Depends on Us We think of the Russia-Ukraine war as a local conflict, but it is much more than that; it is a global war on multiple fronts. The war is not only a military conflict; it is also an economic war of attrition. With skyrocketing gas prices and shortage of staples, people all over the world are feeling the consequences of the war. This war is transforming the entire modus operandi of humanity. Since the dawn of time, we have been accustomed to living by the motto, “survival of the fittest.” By and large, the rule was that the strong determined the rules, and the rules were often abusive toward the weak. Now, it seems like a new mindset has set in: Wanting something and being strong enough to take it does not mean that the world will accept it. The war, therefore, is being fought on the inside no less, and perhaps more than on the outside. Our very makeup is changing from abusive to cooperative, from narcissistic to altruistic. It hurts, and it will not happen without a struggle, but it is irreversible. This is the path of our evolution toward the purpose of our creation-to encompass within us all of creation. To do that, we must come to care for it, just as a mother encompasses her child through her maternal love. The struggle to transition from our current uncaring and mean approach to all creations but ourselves, into wise and compassionate beings is called “the war of Gog and Magog” or Armageddon. Since the war is about our inner makeup, we can fight it within us. If we object to struggling with ourselves over who will rule-the ego or love-the physical reality will force us to choose love nonetheless. However, it will do so by hurting us in a very physical way. The war in Eastern Europe is nothing compared to what we might have to endure if we resist the process. The horrific descriptions of our sages and prophets hint at it, and we would not want to live through it. Alternatively, we can fight this war within us without firing a single bullet. The choice is in our hands. All we need is to continue in the same direction that nature is already leading us: toward connection. If we make an effort to care for one another, even though initially we don’t, then we are moving in the right direction. If we try to resolve conflicts not with guns or even legal battles, but by strengthening the care and friendship between us, then we are saving lives and sparing torments from countless people. In conclusion, let us try to rise above the hatred and see the human on the other side, who suffers too. Let us think that this war was given to us so we would think about each other more than we have so far. After all, were it not for this war, we would not notice one another. Now that it is here, we are no longer indifferent. Although our feelings our currently negative, now that we are aware of them, we can work on them together and turn them around. These are the wars of the Messiah who moshech [Hebrew: pulls] us out of the ego, and into mutual love.

Stupid Head ... these tires have 128 psi in them not 30 like a car tire.
