What a fantastic discussion. I was sat saying 'yes' constantly. You all are so correct in what you have said. We get so annoyed with people who do not realise that dogs need boundaries and rules. Our dogs, like our children, now hardly ever need telling off, as they know the boundaries and the consequences. This means we have a fantastic life with our dogs, they are calm, happy, relaxed and look to us as the head of the pack, and one that loves them. Thank you all, I loved this.

I do a lot of praise for my dog, that doesn't mean there's no boundraies and rules. If anything, there's a lot of boundaries and rules. I've raised him since 8 weeks. He's now 20 months. To be able to teach these boundaries and rules, I've often had to teach him what I expected of him. It's not just what not to do, it's what I want him to do instead. And with that comes a lot of prasie and reinforcement. I have a dog that waits for his food, waits to go out the door, waits to get out the car, that doesn't beg for food, he allows me to cut his nails, give him eye drops, and brush him. (He'll sit for me, give paw to brush his feathers, lay down with his head on my lap so I can brush his neck etc.) All voluntary. He can walk off if he wants to, and doesn't. He doesn't pull on walks, but gets to sniff around for 99 percent of the walk.. He's become exactly what I want him to be. And it took consistency, kindness, patience and lots of praise. Rules and boundaries for sure, but it's not taken a harsh word, nor leash correction, or prong or e-collars. Did I have to repeat myself ad nauseum? Yes. Do I still repeat myself? No. You can have rules and boundaries while still "saying yes constantly".

I’m so thankful I found you guys. When my rescue turned out to be way more reactive than I was ready for, I didn’t know what to do, when we’d just see a dog at the end of the street, she’d start going nuts and I couldn’t get her attention back, I could literally hold a treat an inch from her nose and couldn’t get her to look at me (and the constantly feeding treats while you walk method doesn’t work so well when the dog is only 15lbs). I walked her so much to try and desensitize her (since she seemed constantly overstimulated when we left the house) but it just didn’t seem to be getting any better. She’s my fifth dog and the only one I ever considered rehoming, but then I found Beckman and finally had a path. She’s still a work in progress, but now she’ll walk loose leash and come when I call her the first time.

I know this is a little older, couple.months old, and I just started the interview so this has nothing to do with the interview. I just want to say I absolutely love both these guys. Both channels have totally changed me and my dogs and how I train my dogs forever. I was having a real problem with a dominant dog. I've got two males and one female. The two males after hitting about a year and a half old started to have issues over food and generally who was the most dominant. I was so worried that I would have to re-home one or both of them if I couldn't get it under control. We don't have much money so paying for training is out of the question. I was up until about 4am a few nights ago desperately trying to find a solution. These three are very special to me. Their mom was the best dog I ever had the privilege of living with. She became pregnant by accident and she passed away after giving birth. I was devastated but I was left with 9 new born pups to care for. My wife and I took shifts sleeping so one of us was up to feed and care for the pups. We rehomed all but 3 and these three were the ones I was the closest to. Parvo came through the house while we still had about 6 of them and it took one of the pups and their father. Again devastated. I pushed water down their throats to keep the 5 survivors alive. So needless to say if I couldn't get these guys under control I was going to lose the only link I still had to Harley. Watching both your channels has shown me that I needed to be the boss. That they needed a leader and I needed to be that leader. We are about 4 days now I to the training and my whole family sees a noticable difference. They sit, stay and come on command which was something they would only previously do if we had a treat for them. We even seem closer if that's even possible. I love my dogs and I realize that being we don't have a whole lot of money isn't ideal so I've been forced to do most everything myself from training to vaccinations to treatments that I can handle. I am all they've ever known. Their first memories are of me and my wife feeding them. When they opened their eyes it was me who they saw. So basically after this extremely long winded comment I want to say thank you for putting this information online for people like me to find. I no longer fear the aggression. I handle it with confidence and patience now. I feel my own confidence has increased along with my dogs. Thank you both.

I know as balanced trainers, by nature we have no fight in us, we literally got into this to help people avoid banging their heads against a wall... but I'm starting to think this may have to be a battle. I try to stay in my lane, but lately you two and Ivan have me thinking a little bit differently. I don't know if going heads on against Zak and the ideologists is necessarily the best approach. That seems like adding fuel to the fire, as much as i would LOVE for things to go south for that movement, literally for the sake of the dogs that we help. But I do like Ivan's recent idea of funding more studies that are actually scientific is a good one. I love all of this podcast, every freaking second, keep this dialogue going! The world needs more balanced superstars talking the good talk!

@13:25 - yes, exactly! There are large unbelievably powerful dogs with histories that need a rapid, REALIABLE resolution to their behaviors or they will face euthanasia. A dog biting somebody, or even just being too jovial in their "friendliness" and using their 150+ pound frame of muscle and energy to bring a child down hard, will rarely get a 2nd chance, and there certainly won't be a 3rd. We had a male lab like that. He had a massive bowling ball head and an amazing drive. Once we got him in line (Fred Hassen's seminar was instrumental), that drive was key to making him an amazing dog. I've spent some time reading and looking at videos re: Dog Daddy & Zac George '(dog) fight of the dog trainers' and 1 thing that struck me was how mellow the dog's Zac interacts with are. I found myself asking (aloud): "who the heck is selecting these easy, smaller dogs for him"?? Even the "brand new pit bull from the pound" video had a well behaved dog, highly food & praise motivated, (and may be wrong about this next part) that looked quite young -- an ideal case for any trainer. If those are the dogs you train - great, cool.... but then why lambast and try to cancel somebody that does take on those extreme cases? And to just dismiss them as cruel?? Furthermore - if George is so confident in his methods and expertise, why the reluctance to engage in an open debate or contest of ideas? That's how scientific and philosophical disagreements are aired out in civilized society. That's how we learn, how we improve, how we evolve... Sorry if I'm bringing this up at inopportune time, it's just been all over my feed.

"even just being too jovial in their "friendliness" and using their 150+ pound frame of muscle and energy to bring a child down hard, will rarely get a 2nd chance" - fear mongering
@trumpetpunk42 Жыл бұрын
@@johntrainsdogs"fear mongering" sounds like a disingenuous straw-man of a valid concern - Large dogs often don't often have much "runway" available to afford slow gradual improvement on certain problems. I'm not solidly in either camp, But it's possible both are true: that aversives are just a band-aid (or tourniquet), and sometimes that's exactly what you need.

Beckman does say it at 41 mins, that he hasn't seen a single video of them working with an actually dangerous dog and helping them or resolving their behavior in any way shape or form. (he also has a good video out about that) I have to agree. In this video Beckman claims that the debate over positive reinforcement only versus the more firm method is OVER. There really is no video evidence out there as Beckman claims.( I haven't found any either) yet there's hundreds and hundreds of videos of Dog Daddy, Beckman (and all the others they use the firm approach) they clearly show results.

@@johntrainsdogs I'm unsure if you are nit picking OR naive. I've seen that exact scenario play out. Dog goes to greet a kid on an icy winter day, kid loses footing, and the dog makes an already bad fall worse. Kid happens to have orthodontic work that gets destroyed, and the aftermath pics make it look far worse than it actually is... Kid's mother (whose middle name is SSatan) raises hell. Love, love, love Dog Daddy and Joel Beckman!!! Great interview with my favorites! People don't know what to do with dogs that act out. So they use their brain to try stuff they are guessing what to do then when it doesn't work they blame the dog as if it's their true nature then take it to the pound or put the dog down or they get smart and use you for correction. You are saving millions of dogs and giving owners the right information. And preventing a lot of damage. I so appreciate you both!

I heard zack George this morning saying about dog daddy's training methods, obviously he has never trained aggressive/reactive dogs, treats do not work when thay are in that mindset

I train reactive and aggressive dogs and although time consuming, you can change the mindset of the dog without using aggressive aversive methods. I worked with a German shepherd that I thought would never play with dogs, but I slowly knocked out certain things that were causing her anxiety/fear/aggression. She’s now able to be around dogs with almost no hiccups (no dog is perfect) my type of training is actually a bit different than most trainers. I focus on the dogs emotional state and I let the dog choose what it needs to do to be comfortable. Many dog trainers (some I work with) focus a lot on the bond between handler and dog which is beneficial but what happens when you’re not there? What happens when you can’t tell a dog no or correct it? I know alot of aversive training methods require the handler to be present ( I still use some but sparingly like a leash pop) dog training is such a large industry and there are so many techniques and methods but as dog trainers we shouldn’t say that one way works and the other doesn’t. There is a time and place for both positive training and aversive/negative training.

Lots of trainers who work with aggressive and reactive dogs hate augustos methods. It's far from just one set of trainers or Zak. It's balanced trainers with prongs and e-collars too.

LOVE LOVE LOVE the Dog Daddy Interview! Can you guys get Cesar? That would be epic. Also a topic suggestion: the importance of understanding dog body language for non-dog people. for example, delivery people and postal workers often encounter lose and unattended dogs. Being able to read dog body language would help make their job less stressful and more safe.

Thanx guys for this great interview/conversation (Haven't seen all that much from DD but i believe he's a sincere and caring person) I hope this is going to be a recuring (monthly) thing, having a guest on the Pod. Also i think i would be nice if the guest are not only dog behavior "fixers" but people that work with dogs on variety of levels, like Sport dog trainers, groomers or breeders for example.
