I'm glad my question got asked, and the dog is truly awesome Robert. I really like that my question got picked up, both stories (Beren & Luthien and Fall of Gondolin) are great :) !

I wonder if Farmer Maggot's dogs are descended from Huan?
@thebrotherskrynn
@thebrotherskrynn 3 жыл бұрын
@@tominiowa2513 Very likely, I like to imagine that they are! That Huan is the source of all dogs, and that his children remember the loyalty and love he shared with both Beren and Luthien, and that humanity and Elves remembered in turn the great loyalty on some level of Huan, and that this is why folks in Middle-Earth tame canines and keep them close.

Actually I think it was specific that Eru did the change in that the verbiage is that when Ar-Pharazoan set foot on Aman “the Valar laid down their guardianship of Arda” thus leaving it to Eru to directly express his will.

The idea of weapons made from meteoric metal comes not from any fiction but from real pre-historic artifacts.

When the Valar were young and attending world building school, Manwë sat in the front row and brought Eru an apple each day, while Melkor sat in the back row using his text book to hide the pictures he was drawing. 😉

"Houses of Gondolin" sounds like it would be an epic show!!! i would have to say out of every fictional city i have ever read about this is the one i love the most!!! I wish this city had a far deeper history written about it because just looking at it in pictures - its breathtaking!!! All of the pictures are from so far, and I've seen them so many times i feel like i have almost been there so many times but have never made it even though i have read "Fall of Gondolin!!!"

Hobbits must have appeared latest in the late Second Age, Gollum picks up the Ring a few years after the attack on Isildur's company at the Gladden Fields. Gollum had a grandma, and her whole clan lived in a collective near the Gladden Fields. It is unreasonable to believe that some humans was suddenly shrunk to half the standard size in a few generations, so there must have existed hobbits in the area some hundred of years before the end of the Second Age. They migrated westwards when the Mirkwood started to get shadowy and dark, and that was about 1150 in the Third Age, though.

Gollum picks up the ring that Isildur lost about 2500 years after he lost it. Then Gollum held it for about 500 years.

Yeah it was about 2,500 years after Isildur's death. Also, you don't need to force hobbits into the story of the second age even if they probably could have existed.

With regard to Ungoliant and why Shelob isn't as powerful - this is a common theme in Tolkien. The world is getting less fantastical, less magical and less powerful.

Robert, I think we are really desperately in need of an in depth analysis of the story the Children of Hurin, and how it was interwoven with and inexorably linked with the final downfall of the elves in the First Age. One of the best single storylines in all of the Silmarillion and hands down the most tragic. Hurin, Morwen, Turin Turambar..the best and worst of the race of Men all in one.

Think the valar stod off in the first age because they almost destroyed arda first war with Morgoth and basicly sunk a whole land when they finaly stepped in.
@Sprayber
@Sprayber 3 жыл бұрын
They just kind of skip over that whole major detail when they talk of the Valar. It's presented as a matter of the Valar choosing to abandon the children when their direct involvement leads to destruction on a vast scale. They also miss is that no one knows what Ilúvatars direction may have been.

Almost like in the Cold War where the Superpowers couldn't directly fight because that would leave inconceivable destruction so they had their Proxy Wars through third parties.

The different "groups" (kindred) of elves: they all started as one group in Middle Earth when they first appeared. It's what they decided to do after that which divided them into the different groups.

It is weird that Ectheliin is only mentioned for like 1 sentence but kills such an important. Gothmog was far more significant than Sauron in terms of deeds (even tho we’re told Sauron is Morgoth’s greatest servant-we’re shown Gothmog & Glaurong to be far more fearsome foes. I can’t imagine Huan beating Gothmog or Glaurong in a fight

2:05:20 Elves and men migrate West in the manner of Edith and J.R.R's faiths at birth (before his Luthien gave up her immortality): perhaps the dwarves, having a different genesis, and those men who became Easterlings, were not East of their Eden.

I think just maybe that Ungoliant was meant to be Melkor's mate the way Varda is Manwe's. That would give symmetry to the number of the Valar. 16 instead of 15. But...reasons. Just my passing theory

Funny thing about Wheel of Time. I tried. I really did. Over and over again. Never made it past book 2. Sooo. Wel then, someone said try Malazan Book og the Fallen. Really tough read, they said-. And I love it. This is also a very challenging read. But the pay-off is outstanding I have laughed and sobbed - it is SO good. Imo leaps and bounds above Wheel of Time. I wish they had made these books into a TV show instead. Sorry guys.

I personally think it just means Tolkien read lovecraft but would never admits, that and the nameless things. But she presents a big problem for Tolkien because she seems to be outside the plans of illuvatar, and if so that would conflict with his real world religious beliefs

If Ulmo had not turned Elwing into a bird and if Elwing had not flown to Earendil, would Earendil have been able to navigate through the Enchanted Isles to Aman? Also, I think Ulmo must have known that Elwing would jump off the cliff because he was right there ready to transform her into a bird.

It is interesting to think that Haleth's moving her people to the Forest of Brethil set the stage for what would happen to Turin much later. Had she decided to stay in Thargelion and no men ever lived in Brethil, how would Turin's story have changed? Would Turin have tried to kill Glaurung, if the people were not in danger? Maybe someone can try a what-if video on that question.

Fun stuff thanks! Maybe I missed it, but what about the green gem that Arwen gave to Elanor? Is that yet another Elessar? That gets discussed somewhere, I forget where. Also, could Melkor have bred mûmakil from elephants? I always assumed they were mammoths, but real mammoths were not hugely larger than elephants.

So finally finnished it, listened a bit live but fell asleep. Didnt catch yesterday whom Glorfindel was lot less powerful than...aperently Elrond...i wouldnt agree of that statement. Probably Elrond was more powerful...but alot? Only thing making him more powerful is Tolkiens love of bloodlines and Elrond comes from some powerful ones...BUT Elrond is partly an halfelf and even if his human ancestors are realy mighty they are human, less than elfs...sure he has Melian the maia in there to and some kingly lines of elfs...but Glorfindel has been in the blessed realm...twice...he is from a high house of princes, slayed a balrog was reincarnated, most likly in a higher state, he is sent to middle earth as a vasal of the valar. Im not so sure Elrond is that much more powerful and om quite sure Glorfindel beat Elrond in Combat.
@Kalimchd
@Kalimchd 3 жыл бұрын
Completely agree. I had to do a double take too. Glorfindel after he was reembodied was even more powerful and was sent to middle earth to assist. Elrond never saw the trees. Also powerful, but not sure at Glorfindel level.
