INDEPENDENCE DAY: RESURGENCE Synopsis:

I agree totally with Honest Trailer’s comment about the movie they actually wanted to watch. The side plot is where Jeff Goldblum goes to Africa to visit a crashed old alien ship. He finds a Warlord and his low tech army that have been battling the marooned aliens for years. That little section was more interesting than the rest of the movie, and was something that I would have liked to see. An alien ship crashes in a civil war torn African country. The Warlords and their gangs have to put aside their differences to deal with rampaging aliens. There is even a character arc where the Warlords turn out to have saved their country, instead of just destroying it through constant petty warfare. But that doesn’t seem to be sufficient source material for a mega-blockbuster Hollywood movie.

To this day, I never understood Roland Emmerich's motivations for filmmaking.

He wants to be successful and have people watch his movies, like any filmmaker. The problem is his movies, after Independence Day, never made back sufficient $$ due to his bloated film budgets, So he went back to the well and made a sequel that had all the clichés and tropes one would expect from a typical sequel. More, more and more of everything. And then finish off with more sequel baiting. Heck, even the totally insipid Moonfall teases a bit with a possible sequel. But to be fair to him, Midway was better than I was expecting.

Will Smith wants to be the star, but Independence Day has a big cast and the movie is always switching perspective by following everyone, even if Will were in the movie and his scenes were flawless, it stil wouldn't change how bad everything else was. Suicide Squad was also a bad movie, but Will Smith at least made it watchable, he was carrying the movie, Deadshot was amazing.

This movie came out at a time when Hollywood was casting Chinese actors in roles in EVERY SINGLE MOVIE, even if it make the tiniest bit of sense just to pander to China so that they would show the movie there Like Kong: Skull Island, set during the Vietnam war when we were enemies with China Or Transformers: Age Of Extinction in which the entire 3rd act takes place in China for no reason whatsoever

To be fair, to pander to the Western audiences, the Japanese films even way back in the 60's and 70's would contain token American actors. Just watched "The War in Space" from 1977, which is a great example.
