The hummingbird is the first national bird of TTO. It's on the Coat Of Arms, buttons and badges of the Defence Force and Police Service. That came from the amerindians, because when their elders died, they took the form of a hummingbird and settled in this land, that is why Trinidad is known of the "Land of the hummingbird". The amerindians sailed from Venezuela, and when they discovered this island with their hummingbird ancestors, they named this country Ierie, which means "land of the hummingbird. The Ibis became the national bird because a member of art committee in 1962 choose it because of the red feathers which reminded him of the red colour of the national flag, and the cocrico represented Tobago.
