I wish I didn't flirt with my Community College Professors, during math class! Thank You, Professor Laramy. I could listen to You, for Hours. I'm a new Gem cutter, learning what two angles, crown and pavilion, for my little rough garnet stone of RI 1.74 This is what I'm looking for, Professor. Donna Chassis

I have a question that I hope you know the answer for. I can see perfect 6-6 in the optometric office (with the test lens kit), but (!) my eyesight is not as good with my eyeglasses although they have exactly the same prescription. when I took off the adjustable frame and tried to look with my own eyeglasses I couldn't see anything. with my own eyeglasses it wasn't 6-6 anymore. how can it be? what could be the problem? because as I understand there are no bad or good materials . my prescription involves 0.5 cyl correction if this is changing anything.

Trial frames usually have high quality glass lenses. Refraction usually takes place under the perfect ideal conditions for visual acuity. The eye chart is at a fixed distance from you and those lenses. The eye chart is not a random set of characters but designed with very specific patterns, angles and sizes. In other words real world vs. dream world. I'm not sure where you are getting, "no bad materials" from? You can actually "see" the difference in quality in the lensmeter between glass and poly. Anyway - find a better optician and they should be able to get you closer to that trial frame vision. Closer not perfect... John

I have tried my glasses in the same conditions I tried the trial frame. so it all comes down to the lens quality as I understand? Maybe I can try to move to a lower index which will give me a better refraction, like Trivex or cr-39 . I wonder if the higher Abbe value of these two lenses can also contribute to a sharper and clearer image at the optometrist office although I am not sure it has any influence because the eye chart was only black and white. What do you think? Also let's say I will move to cr-39 which has a better refraction, but then isn't the thickness of it in the -3 and -3.75 minus prescription going to counteract lowering the index? And even give me the same results I get with a low quality lens like the poly?

@@talflex25 Go with Trivex

lvl 3 of how index works, sounds like we need to get some quantum physicists to unlock that mystery!

Don't tell anyone else but I think that is actually my favorite video we have ever done. That series was a real "eye opener" nuk-nuk-nuk. The stuff you are taught vs. the stuff that is true...

I just got to the chapter in the "System for Ophthalmic Dispensing" where it's explaining just this, so thank you for covering it! ✌️😁

Fun Fact: Follow the etymology of the word ophthalmic and it means eye. So that book is actually called The System for Eye Dispensing. Ewww, gross. What was that movie - Minority Report....

Index of Refraction, Abbe Value and Specific Gravity are all part of lens terms and should be watched together.
