Irfan Pathan when he debuted for India in 2004 he was just 19 years old he debuted as a left arm fast bowler At that time javagal Srinath was retired from international cricket and apart from zaheer khan there were no good quality fast bowlers at that time. Ashish nehra was only playing one day matches but was not consistent and in test team he was in and out of the team. Ajith agarkar was also inconsistent with the ball at that time he was in and out of the team due to inconsistency so Irfan Pathan utilised the opurtunity very well. when he started his career he started as a young fast bowler who was bowling fast had a good pace and also good swing that time he didn't had batting responsibility his role was only a fast bowler in the team and he supported zaheer khan really well he eased off pressure from zaheer khan in the bowling department he was really impressive with his bowling and was consistent for almost 1.5- 2 yrs with the ball but in 2005-2006 when Dravid was Indian captain Graig chappel was the coach he saw Irfan Pathan talent with bat because though he was batting at no.9/10th position but he was batting really well like a specialist batsman so chappel thought since India didn't had a fast bowling all-rounder at that time and Irfan who had that talent of becoming a specialist fast bowling all-rounder decided to promote Irfan in batting order and hence he was pushed to no.3 in batting order then Irfan was contributing with bat really well but when Mahendra Singh dhoni became captain he wanted Irfan Pathan as a bowler and though he was contributing with the bat well but since he was not bowling consistently well MSD told him that untill we see him as a consistent bowler and untill he come back to his original bowling form which he was before in his initial career then only he will be in the team untill then he has to go back to domestic cricket and should retain his bowling form and later he should be the part of the Indian team he said hence Irfan was dropped from the Indian team MSD didn't no how to creat all-rounders every all rounder who debuted for Indian team whether Praveen Kumar , bhuvaneshwar Kumar or Ravindra jadeja he used them only as bowlers and though they had good talent in batting was not allowed to bat higher up the order MSD would use those all rounders only has bowlers and wanted them to become specialist bowlers first but if you want to creat all-rounders you have to give them good confidence in both department and should utilise them in both the department equally but he was not doing that hence Irfan who was though contributing well with the bat and had won few matches with the bat for India and also had good batting career but still MSD was not satisfied with his bowling and was also neglecting his batting though he would contribute well with the bat because he was not bowling well hence he was dropped from the team and later when he came back to the team his bowling action rythm and speed all declined and he was getting frequently injured because of all these things Irfan had to give retirement to Indian cricket if he had not given retirement so early today he would be the no.1 fast bowling all-rounder

Dhoni didn't give irfan chance like he did for his own buddy Ravindra Jadeja. Dhoni also finished many other talented careers as well. He was not exactly cricket minded unlike Dada was. But he was lucky to have achieved a lot due to heavy contributions from his teammates. Irfan was the Man of the Match in the last match he played. Yet he was dropped. It was painful. Irfan had said it also, that he didnt get the support of his captain. Thus, we lost, the potentially most talented all rounder after Kapil Dev. Nevertheless, i commend Dhoni for a relatively successful captaincy. He got long unquestioned number of captaincy years.
