We needed a socialist beginning at the start, to have a reset of opportunities for everyone. If land redistribution didn't happen, we would have left a vacuum for Communist Revolutions to happen, because they were happening in many countries between 1950-1980. China was the biggest and next example. It is however correct to say, that after 1975 onwards, Indira Gandhi's move towards further socialization of the economy e.g. nationalization of banks, was a bad move. The liberalization we went through 1991 could have been done around a decade before, like in China.

If Nehru would have stressed on Private economy rather than Socialist economy, by now India would be one of the developed Nations in the world. The potential was always there and yes, Nehru's educational policies helped create the educated middle class, but it was plagued by corruption, caste and religion based politics promoted by Congress that ruled India for long years after Independence. Only after 1993, economy was liberalized and license raj was curtailed. Last 30 years was when India grew the most and with its true potential. But last 9 years it has picked up stream with a strong Nationalist govt at center. If this Govt continues for next 10 years, I am sure in spite of all issues opposition harps on, India will reach its bright position it deserves.
