People who complains about Tamils not speaking Hindi,should understand that we dont have any need to learn it. if we are to work in Hindi speaking City,then we will learn it.We tamils are very proud of our language and culture,& we know what hindi did to many minor languages, Some in Bihar, even think speaking hindi over their native tongue is a status symbol.Even if we can speak fluent English,we will talk only in tamil with other Tamils. When it comes to north vs south it always comes up as Hindi vs Tamil. Why? People in north needs to get out of the mindset that when they arrive to south automatically everyone in south needs to know Hindi. Iam a professional staying in a metro city of western MH for some years, here as a non hindi speaker i try my best to learn hindi and speak hindi to locals, but whenever they find my hindi is flawed and not fluent they immediately switch to fast hindi or their regional language and worst case scenario they start judging me as south indian and gossip about the same to the person standing next to them infront of me. I mean that, Obviously they are judging me in some sort which i feel uncomfortable, this kind of situation you will never find in Tamil Nadu hence the quote "vantharai valavaikum tamizhnadu" which literally means - irrespective of your birth place (outside TN) Tamil Nadu will make you live. You can literally find meaning to this quote to how many people from other states are living with prosperity. That is because we put forward humanity before race, we never judge or take advantage of the fact that the person doesn't know tamil (most) but we never get the mutual love from you guys when we go to elsewhere states (especially Hindi speaking states) . You guys always judge pass comment about our skin color, our broken hindi, our names with no surnames, and our stable food rice C'mon man how will it be if we mock an random north Indian asking him/her 1. Why you look soo pale like arabians (are you from iran) 2. How your speaking hindi ( amalgated language by mughal and mostly used as language of underdeveloped states) dont you have a mother tongue? 3. Why your are using ur caste name or family name ? Are you taking pride of your caste people or you recognise anyone with their caste and judge them high caste or low caste or give special prevelage to a stranger just because he is having your surname ( thinking he may be a distance relative) 4. We spoke Manipravalam (Tamil mixed with Sanskrit) before & during British era ....even have so many literary works in the same ! The tamilnadu government is sure two language policy is good for the states economy. They have given freedom to people to learn hindi privately. It is individuals free will to learn hindi. There is hindi dakshin prachar sabha with trichy as headquarters which provides TN people to learn hindi privately. People learn as well. As per indian constitution 1968 amendment it is said that people from north india have to learm a south indian language and likewise. I am from Tamil Nadu and we have made an effort to learn hindi but unfortunately people from north don't know to pronounce kannada properly. They don't take effort to learn about sputh indian culture but expect us to speak their language when they arrive in south India but dont reciprocate when we request to. They need to learn geography first😊

I'm a Tripurese Bengali, from Northeast. Sometimes we're called chinkies or Chinese, but that doesn't dilute our nationality or patriotism. But I'd say instead of replying them back in their own language we persevered & learnt Hindi so that this language gap reduces & now we're on par with them & sometimes even better. Diversity is good & we preserved our uniqueness, but sometimes the gap creates more problems than it solves. It's true illiterate hypocrites will always be like that. But a majority of Indians who knows Hindi can't be typecasted as illiterate just for not knowing English as it's not the mother tongue for most of the Indians. They learn magadhi or bhojpuri or maithili or braj or awadhi or kauravi or pahadi or marwadi or gujarati or Bengali or Assamese or Punjabi & then they learn Hindi to communicate with all other to communicate. This can be the reason why the common believe among them is that it's better if Hindi is made common language (not national, just common). That's why it's needed that we have a common local origin language as the link language instead of English.
