6:30 yea cause before partition there was only one Bengal then India helped east Pakistan to get it's independence then they named their nation as Bangladesh so the eastern part that got independence was called Bangladesh and the western part that is in India is called West Bengal.

Just a quick correction: The original name of Mumbai was also Mumbai, named after a local deity by the indigenous Koli people who inhabited the islands before the Portuguese. It was also called ‘Bombaim’ instead of Bom Bahia (info from the wiki)
@GazilionPT5 жыл бұрын
2:04 My guess is that the theory that "Bombay" derives from (old) Portuguese "Bom Bahia" is a fake etymology. At the very best, it's half true. All Portuguese names have a grammatical gender, and any adjective you use to qualify those names must agree with their gender. "Bahia" (modern spelling: Baía) is a female name. But "Bom" is a male adjective. It just doesn't agree. To be correct, the original name had to be "Boa Bahia". The only option that occurs to me so that this etymology is not absolutely fake is: Boa Bahia --> Bo' Bahi' --> Bom Bahim. Which is to say, the ending vowel of each word is first suppressed, and then each word gets a nasal ending. (This kind of "nasalisation out of nowhere" is not that uncommon: for example, the word "muito" is actually pronounced as "muinto", with a nasal first syllable. Also, in Brazil the infinitive verb "vir" is often said like "vim", because: "vir" --> "vi" --> "vim".)

Compostela Valley is a province in Davao Region in the Philippines. It is the only province in the region that doesn't have "Davao" in it's name. Now, an act to rename it as "Davao de Oro" has been passed and there would be a plebisite to confirm the change. Now they said that the purpose of renaming it is to avoid confusion with Cagayan Valley and Compostela, Cebu. I just disagree to this because I think it will make things more complicated. I think I've known enough Davaos in my life

I believe the name is religious-based so it appears everywhere. It does not help that the current President was the mayor of Davao and approves of the changes.

TBH, I don't get it. Cities can have different names in different languages, especially important cities, so why go through so much fuss to change the English name to match the local one? (And it's not just India; Ukraine just changed Kiëv to Kyiv) English examples - Cologne/Köln, Prague/Praha, Moscow/Moskva, Persepolis/Parsa, Athens/Athēnē, Bangkok/KrungThep
@erdyantodwinugrohozheng5 жыл бұрын
Another example is Macau/Macao, a Special Administrative Region (SAR) in China besides Hong Kong. Yup, before 2014 and even Macau was in Portuguese administration before the transfer of sovereignty with China in 1999, the former name of it was "Macao" in Portuguese spelling. But, in 2014, their government started to change the name from Macao to "Macau". However, this causes some problems, if you're in English speaking countries, it makes it struggling. Some countries take the former one, but on the other hand, the other countries are no idea of changing into the newer one. For example, the US, Canada, and Singapore had changed into " Macau", while in the UK, Australia, and even China are still retaining the former one. The other problem is their ISO name and Internet domain, MO and .mo are actually abbreviated from "Macao", a former name of " Macau".

About the east bengal thing- before 1947 West Bengal and Bangladesh were one big state! After independence Bengal is divided into two parts, and the western part is called West Bengal and the eastern part was called East Pakistan. After the independence of East Pakistan in 1971, it got a new name 'Bangladesh' which means (bengal country) . So technically east bengal is Bangladesh, just because it isn't a part of India anymore that's why West Bengal government wants to change the name 'West Bengal' to Bangla!!!

Bangladesh is technically East Bengal, the reason that the state was named West Bengal is the number of Bengali people living there.
@SantomPh5 жыл бұрын
The original division was Hindu West Bengal and Muslim East Bengal, at least during partition. East Bengal became East Pakistan and later Bangladesh. A number of institutions with the name "East Bengal" still exist in West Bengal, including India's second most successful football club.

Silly comments about Britain 'ruining everything' aside, why should I not call these boroughs by their British names? Especially the big three- Bombay, Madras, and Calcutta, which were all founded by Britain! Should we call Rome 'Roma', because that is what the Italians call it? No. Should the French stop calling London 'Londres'? Why should they?
