India's new citizenship law sparks protests | DW News

India has passed the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB), a new law that will make it easier for non-Muslim minorities from neighbouring countries to gain Indian citizenship. Opposition to it is especially strong in India's northeastern Assam state, which borders Bangladesh. Assam is an ethnically diverse region, with a large Muslim population. Thousands have defied a curfew to protest the new measure. People in Assam fear undocumented Hindu migrants from neighboring Bangladesh will now be granted citizenship, and dilute the political sway of the region. A recent citizenship registry exercise already excluded 2 million people in Assam, who now have to prove their citizenship or be rendered stateless. Hindus left off the list now have protection. But not Muslims, who could face deportation.

I am from Assam , and I am currently studying in 'University of Science And Technology , Meghalaya' So to let the India know I'm writing thins comment. The Internet is also down here in Meghalaya, but fortunately its working now . In Guwahati only, 9 people including students were shot dead by the army . But all of them were protesting peacefully. You may see in the internet the protesters made way for ambulance and the local civilians . And one more depressing thing I'm in tears writing this . Students of COTTON COLLEGE STATE UNIVERSITY (placed in central Guwahati, panbazar area) were protesting in ther campus area Peacefully . Then the army break in and and when the students ,our friends opposed that , Army just beated them brutally irrespective of sex . The army didn't stopped there, they went inside the hostels and openly fired their arms , we don't know whether anyone was hurt or died. Even in the night the army forcefully locked the students inside the hostels and they are not even allowed to go out to buy their food for mess . They are fighting for our land , fighting with hunger , getting beaten brutally by the army . Please help assam . The centre is making assam the second Kashmir of india. Help us by opposing the bill . We are being killed by the army . Help us we dont want be the 2nd Kashmir of India . JAIAAIASSAM .

Coming back to your point of us moving to cities for higher education etc, we come to to mainland india for studies and whatnot and that isnt permanent and we arent intruding your place neither are we causing any risk to your traditions besides we are very little in number. This govt has left no stone unturned to suppress our voices.I was there in the streets when they opened fire. 8 people were shot. A 16 year old was martyred. I was returning home after walking through 15-20 km distance amidst huge protests throughout Guwahati, Assam and believe me they didn't shoot anyone where huge no. of protesters gathered.The moment we believed that we were about to reach home safely and we saw a crowd of 15-20 people with no intent to indulge in any sort of violence, the crowd was also small compared to the other protests taking place in various parts of the city, suddenly a convoy of police came and started open firing. Had I not entered a butcher's shop to purchase meat with my friend, we could be the ones to get shot. It was the most gruesome sight I have seen in my entire life, still can't recover from it and my heart aches whenever I walk past the 16 year old Martyr's home. Ps- The boy was not even a part of the protest where police opened fire. He was returning from Latashil, Guwahati where artists and common people from different parts of the city gathered to protest peacefully. He was hardly 2km away from home while he was shoot.
