The significance of Cheraman Juma Majsid in the Muziris Heritage Project lies in the fact that it is the first mosque in India.It was built by Malik Deenar, an Arab propagator of Islam and a follower and contemporary of Islamic Prophet Muhammad. It is believed that this mosque was first renovated and reconstructed in the 11th century AD.

No these are just stories made with time.. Chemanan Perumal was having a good relation with Gulf and had a thriving spice trade. He later got attracted towards Islamic practices which helped him in his business and spreading Islam in the land of Kerala. Kerala have a good history of religious brotherhood. Not even this mosque even the history of Christianity dates back to around 1st century which is oldest in South Asia and Christians here practice very distinct form of the religion than other Christians of world.

Not only rich in Islamic history, The tiny town of Kodungallur was where St Thomas apostle of Jesus arrived in Indian subcontinent. It also had a thriving Jewish community. A small synagogue still is preserved in Paravur(8kms from Kodungallur). And also has very ancient hindu temples. It used to be a rich Port Town many centuries ago. When Malik reached the Indian Subcontinent he and with the help of King's sons built a mosque.

If it is true that the mosque is existing since 629AD, it would be one of the oldest in the world, not only in India. This is also testimony to the tolerance of Indians and Hindus that it has not been harmed in spite of so many Islamic invasions and raids and plundering of people and demolition of Hindu temples. One plausible reason could also be the fact that all the Islamic invaders came to India from the north-west and settled mostly in the Gangetic planes etc. They did not reach deep south like Kerala and TN etc which were largely unaffected.
