India is among the fastest-growing Software as a Service (SaaS) market in the world and it also home to some of the world’s leading SaaS startups. Technology has been the strength of Indian entrepreneurs and they have leveraged it to make India the hub of innovative SaaS startups. Today, we will take a look at the top 10 most innovative SaaS startups. 00:00
01:05 #10 MoEngage: Founded by Raviteja Dodda and Yashwanth Kumar in 2014, MoEngage is a SaaS-based platform that uses data analytics to help its clients to better understand their customer behaviour and patterns. MoEngage has clients across 35 countries and touches the lives of more than 400 million people every single month.
02:05 #9 Whatfix: Founded by Khadim Bhatti and Vara Kumar in 2013, Whatfix is a B2B SaaS startup that is helping companies accelerate user adoption of their software applications by easing the process of onboarding, training and support through its personalized and interactive step by step in-app guides. Whatfix saw its revenues grow 3X in 2019 and has expanded its services to over 600 companies around the globe.
02:50 #8 CleverTap: CleverTap, previously known as WizRocket, is a mobile marketing startup which was founded by Anand Jain, Suresh Kondamudi and Sunil Thomas in 2013. It uses artificial intelligence and machine learning to boost user retention by providing personalized customer experience based on their needs. CleverTap has helped its customers to gain $2 billion in incremental revenue and has raised more than $70 million from various investors.
03:32 #7 Manthan: Business intelligence and analytics provider Manthan was founded by Atul Jalan in 2003. Manthan offers cloud-based analytics products which help its clients with consumer-facing businesses to grow by taking data-driven actions to boost customer engagement across different channels like website, physical store and app. Till date, Manthan has raised nearly $100 million from investors including Chiratae Ventures, InnoVen Capital, Temasek Holdings and Norwest Venture Partners.
04:09 #6 Capillary Technologies: Capillary Technologies was started by Aneesh Reddy, Krishna Mehra and Ajay Modani in 2008. Capillary started its operations in Bangalore with SaaS-based mobile-first loyalty program. However, by 2015, Aneesh was the only founder left at the company and it was also losing money rapidly which lead him to shut operations in a couple of markets after rapid expansion. Aneesh managed to turn things around by making Capillary into an omnichannel customer engagement platform to help both online and offline brands.
05:26 #5 Icertis: Contract management startup Icertis, which was founded by Monish Darda and Samir Bodas in 2009. Icertis enables enterprises to manage different kind of contracts to help them ensure compliance, negotiate contracts and handle procurement in order to streamline their supply chain operations. Icertis became a unicorn in 2019.
06:20 #4 Druva: Founded by Jaspreet Singh and Milind Borat in 2008, Druva is an all-in-one data protection provider. Druva offers complete data protection to its customers by providing services like data recovery, data migration, ransomware protection and cloud backup on demand. Druva joined the famed unicorn club last year along with Icertis and has so far helped more than 4,000 customers.
07:21 #3 Freshworks: Founded by Girish Mathrubootham and Shan Krishnasamy in 2010, Freshworks is one of the leading SaaS unicorns in India. Freshworks was started to empower the customer support teams to work with the customers to resolve their issues in an effective and efficient manner. Today, Freshworks has more than 10 SaaS-based products which are being used by more than 150,000 customers across the world. It has raised almost $400 million from its investors.
08:43 #2 HighRadius: Founded by Sashi Narahari way back in 2006, HighRadius is a fintech company that uses artificial intelligence to help its clients to automate their account receivables and payment processes so they can manage their cash flows more efficiently. The startup was bootstrapped by Sashi for more than a decade and today, it has more than 350 customers around the globe across multiple industries and has processed transactions worth more than $1.3 trillion. HighRadius raised its first outside investment in 2017 and became a unicorn in 2020.
09:42 #1 Zoho: India’s SaaS behemoth Zoho was started by Sridhar Vembu way back in 1996. Till date, the startup has been completely bootstrapped by Sridhar. Zoho was initially called AdventNet until 2009. Zoho has emerged as a leader in cloud technology for providing productivity, project management, IT support and sales tools. Today, Zoho has more than 50 million users across more than 180 countries.

@backstagewithmillionaires
@backstagewithmillionaires 3 жыл бұрын
Hi jnaras, thanks a lot! OrangeScape and KiSSFLOW both came up while we were researching for this script, but sadly didn't make it onto the list - if I'm remembering correctly, it was because the other SaaS startups on the list were more heavily funded than OrangeScape, and funding was the metric that we used to compile this list. Would need to fact check this though. It was pretty difficult to select just ten startups, as SaaS is a really large space here in India and there are a lot of awesome startups. In hindsight, we also missed Postman, which is now a unicorn. Hopefully we can make a new version of this list at some point in 2021 which is current and up-to-date. Maybe we'll make it a Top 25 list instead of Top 10, because 10 feels like too small a number for SaaS startups in India. Either way, thanks for watching, and I hope that you enjoyed the video. -Caleb

This is a great idea Varun. We are actually hoping to have some of the founders of these companies on the show as guests in the future, to talk about how they built these startups. However, considering the fact that COVID-19 has India under lockdown, it may be some time before we can arrange such interviews, so we will have a chat about this as a team and decide whether making case study videos is something that we want to do.

@backstagewithmillionaires
@backstagewithmillionaires 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Ajay, well, we here at Backstage with Millionaires have never started a SaaS company, so we aren't sure how to either. But do take a look at any and all of our videos about SaaS (there is a large playlist of SaaSpreneurs on our channel) and you will know everything that we do about starting a SaaS company. Believe it or not, most entrepreneurs don't have a lot of business knowledge or highly specific, refined skills. What sets entrepreneurs apart from other people is 1. They are able to identify a problem that people need a solution to (and I will add that this needs to be something that people are willing to pay for) and 2. They are willing to take a huge risk and invest significant amounts of time, energy, and money in order to solve that problem. As long as you have these two things, jump in and start! 🙂 The tricky part is finding a problem worth solving and unfortunately, because all of the obvious problems are already being solved by people. So you'll need to latch on to something before too many other people realize how large an opportunity it is. Good luck!

Can i ask what brokerage will give you access to the Indian stock market
@backstagewithmillionaires
@backstagewithmillionaires 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Roy, I'm assuming from your name that you're a foreigner. If you're not, my apologies. In India, as long as you belong to one of the eligible countries (it is a long list so I won't paste it here, but you can find it with a quick Google search) you can invest in Indian stocks as a QFI (qualified foreign investor). As a QFI, you can interact with any Indian stock broker as long as that broker _is_ a QDP or your purchase/sale orders are going through a QDP before reaching the broker. A QDP is a Qualified Depository Participant, and there are 62 of them at the moment. That is where I would recommend that you start: looking through the list and picking a QDP. Some of those QDPs may even be brokers themselves, which will simplify the process, or you can reach out to a non-broker QDP as well. I'm not sure if QDPs take a cut of your trades or not (I assume that they would if they are a non-broker QDP) but either way, that list is your starting point: www.sebi.gov.in/sebiweb/other/OtherAction.do?doRecognisedFpi=yes&intmId=15 P.S. as someone who has been living in India for 3 years, trust me when I say that if you're just trying to do this casually, it's going to be a huge headache for you. India does _not_ make it easy for non-Indians to do things in India whenever government or banks are involved. There will be tons of documents that you need to submit, painfully designed websites you need to use, long waits for email replies or phone calls, a bunch of prerequisites which you will need to apply for and complete, technical glitches, and maybe even a bit of under the table payments if you want the process to go more smoothly/quickly. If you can find a QDP who will do all of this heavy lifting for you, then I think you should go ahead. However, if you're planning to take a more DIY approach, you might be better off investing in another country. Hope this helps! -Caleb

@@roym1444 Hi Roy, we may end up making a video detailing the process for foreigners to invest in India, yes. Recently, Reliance Industries made international news because of its very high valuation and investment from a number of different companies like Facebook, so people are taking more and more notice of India's stock market these days. As for your business opportunity idea, I think that you're right! Most brokers are focusing on getting more of India to invest in Indian stocks, but if someone could simplify and streamline the process of investing in India for non-Indian people, they might be able to make a lot of money! And yes, as Dancing Freakz has said, Zerodha is a great company which has made investing in stocks easy for Indians. However, I'm not sure whether they support foreigners investing in India stocks. I know that if you are a foreigner living in India, Zerodha does have some options for you. But I'm not sure if, living in Dublin, you would be able to access stocks through them. Try tweeting at them or shooting them an email. Also, the folks over at r/IndiaInvestment might be able to help you: www.reddit.com/r/IndiaInvestments/ -Caleb

@backstagewithmillionaires 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Yeshwanth, Firstly, thanks for taking the time to watch our video and commenting. As to your question, I don't think I have any logical reason for not including Chargebee. The only problem we had while curating the list was that there are a lot of amazing SaaS startups from India (for good reasons as we mentioned in the video). We knew we were going to miss out on a lot of fantastic startups no matter what we tried. So, in the end, we went with the option of keeping the 10 most funded startups based on our research. If you have any more questions, we would be glad to answer them. -Varun (from BwM)

why do you make videos on india only?
@backstagewithmillionaires
@backstagewithmillionaires 3 жыл бұрын
Hi mate ts, it's kind of a long story, and we will share that story with the BwM community once we hit 10K subscribers, but the short version is that I came to India more than 3 years ago to travel and ended up living here, first in Delhi and now in Bangalore - after about a year and a half, my friend Prithvi, who is a serial entrepreneur (kzbin.info/www/bejne/b37dn3WCaJyUr80) asked me if I wanted to start a KZbin channel with him: his role was to be the director and expert on entrepreneurship, and my role (as someone who knew very little about entrepreneurship) was to be the camera man/editor. However, as time passed and we learned what worked and what didn't work on KZbin, and as my knowledge of entrepreneurship grew, we changed from our original plan and I ended up in front of the camera doing interviews in Bangalore while Prithvi was working on building his own startup in Delhi. Then the pandemic happened, and interviews stopped, meaning that I was in front of the camera 95% of the time, making videos like this one! But to specifically answer your question about why we as a channel make videos about India only, the main reason is that our audience is Indian. We started making content for Indians back at the start of 2019, and so trying to change our audience now wouldn't really make a lot of sense. But at some point if we can expand our channel to include content directed at people from other regions in Asia a bit, or at Asian people as a whole, I think that that might be worthwhile! But we would need to grow our BwM team first, because at the moment all three of us are working as hard as we can just to focus on keeping up with India's startup ecosystem! -Caleb

There is this startup founded in 2003 and then one in 2006, 2007,2008, 2009 then one in 2010 and finally there is one from 1996. Can somebody tell me what a startup is and when to stop calling them a startup? We call men as kids if they are yet to grow up. But the problem is that biologically they are still men.
@backstagewithmillionaires
@backstagewithmillionaires 3 жыл бұрын
That is a really good question Nidhish! Actually, there is no clear definition of a startup. Although, if you want your company company to be identified as a startup under the Startup India scheme, then your company should not be more than 10 years old and should have a revenue of under Rs 100 crore. By this definition, most of Indian giants like Paytm, Byju's or Oyo might not qualify as startups. Definition of a startup will change from person to person as everyone has their own criteria. But in general terms, every company that is young, has ambitious goals, provides unique and innovative product, and continues to scale/grow at a rapid pace can be called a startup. The founders of a startup are driven by a shared vision. Finding new markets for their product that didn't exist previously are some of the key things you will find in a startup. I know its not a clear definition but that's because their isn't one. There is just a structure. Hope that helps you somewhat. -Varun
