No doubt, wc 96 saw some great cricket from all nations. Kenya beating WI, WI beating SA in quartr final and Aus beating WI in semis. Both Ind and SL played the best cricket but honestly SL played better in the tournament. Jaysuriya, kalu, gurusinha, dsilva, ranatunga, mahanama -- 6 players made the team rock solid in batting and vaas, murli, making it the best of bowling. Indian batting mostly depended on sachin and a bit on jadeja and manjrekar but all were inconsistent. Match may be fixed but then it was the deserving team who won.

Well may be it was fixed. However, in my opinion, nothing seemed too fishy except Azharuddin's wicket. Vinod himself was playing with the late middle order and tail, he was notout at just 10 off 29 balls when the match was called off due Eden Garden's historical crowd (which has shown similar behavior on a number of occasions). I do not see India winning that match, Srilanka posted a winning total on the board (250 used to be more than a defending total in those days), Srilanka bowled with discipline and fielded way better than any other team in that tournament. I don't think the match was fixed, there could be some fancy fixing at Azhar's or a couple of more players' end but doesn't seem like a fully fixed game. P.S. I don't know why is he saying that his career ended because he played afterwards until 2000 and his performance was not competent as compare to the strong batting lineup of India. I do remember his last match, it was a final of Sharjah cup against Srilanka, that match turned out to be disasterous as India lost by around 250 runs.

Azhar may have been a crook and fixed matches in Sharjah but I refuse to believe 1996 WC semi against SL was fixed. It was a team decision as told later by Azhar himself, Sanjay Majrekar and even then coach Ajit Wadekar. No captain would lose so humiliatingly willingly in front of home crowd that too in a WC semi-final. Kambli's conduct was always a problem and he had no discipline so his career lasted for a very short time.
