I went to Nepal last december. And we went via Birgunj Ruxhal border crossing through bihar. It was much less hassle, and we had enough cash in indian currency to last us a few days(apparently they do accept Rs100 and Rs500 notes). Although I found there are atms that accept sbi debit cards with some extra tax.Nice experience! Nepal is so beautiful with kind and helpful people. Love from India 🇮🇳 !
