Recently started owning a betta fish. It was a gift to my 2 year old niece so it's something nice for her to look at but I want to know if I'm taking care of it properly so here I am going through a bunch of information for taking care of one. Few questions for Almond Leaves: 1) Is there such a thing as too much tanin? 2) What would be a good amount for a 3gallon tank? 3) If I don't have a natural tank and I leave the leaf inside to decay, should I take it out since all I have is a single betta fish? 4) When people use Almond Leaves, you mentioned it's use in breeding. Could this be treated as an aphrodisiac? Or just something to make the fish comfortable? 5) Apparently this is very good medical-wise for bettas. Does this mean it can overdose?

Your fish should be fine! The tannins release pretty slowly, so it likely won’t affect your fish at all. If you have any sensitive plants though, they may lose their leaves- that happened to me when I added in a big leaf. But everything else should be alright!

Unless the medicine has a requirement/recommendation for working in harder water, than there is no need to change the water in between! Almond leaves would be a fine supplement, or just added in after the course of medication is done.

Hello there. My male betta has developed dropsy. I thought it was a tumor, but it wasn't affecting him. He ate well and swam. He seemed healthy for months, since I noticed his belly. I didn't know what dropsy was, until today. I'm treating with Betta Fix and hoping for the best. Is it too late?
@BetterBetta4 жыл бұрын
Hi there. Hopefully your betta is doing alright. I’ve heard varying things on dropsy. While I’ve never had success curing it currently and there used to be no cure, some people are now having success treating it- even though I haven’t been able to. The key is catching it early and without being with your fish personally it’s hard to tell exactly when it would have taken effect (the pineconing), so I wish you the best of luck with your fish, I hope everything turns out okay. 💕

@BetterBetta4 жыл бұрын
It certainly could have been. I know plant matter does decay in the tank, and while I haven’t seen mine do this before, it is not uncommon. It may have been a type of algae, but I would still say throwing it out would be a good choice. I use the tiniest piece when it put it in my tank, and that way I’m not out anything if it does get all gross

Can we put it when fish is in it
@BetterBetta4 жыл бұрын
Yep! There will be no harm in that. Because the tannins release slowly, there will be no shock to your fish. If your using just the straight tannins, I’d recommend adding a little at a time and not all at once, but no matter how you choose to do it, it can be done when the fish is in the tank!

Hi! Question, is it ok to use green tea on your betta? Because someone suggested us to put in some green tea as a subtitute if there’s no IAL and to heal bettas. So, I’ve googled and done some research, but there’s not much info...
@BetterBetta4 жыл бұрын
I’ve heard you can, as long as it’s natural (no additives) and is decaf, but I’d personally only use that for emergencies if it’s impossible to get your hands on IAL. They can even be ordered online, so I’d suggest trying all those methods before using tea- just to be safe! As you noted, there is a lot more info on IAL. But, it’s not harmful to use tea if very careful and knowledgeable about what’s in your tea!

It should be fine, the tannins will release slowly so it won’t harm him. That’s what is tinting the water! Blackwater tanks are rich with tannins and don’t harm them, so I think one leaf will be just fine.

Great video! Just found your channel. I have a Fluval Spec 3-stage Filtration System (Comes with foam block, activated carbon and BioMax bio rings). Will this affect the benefits of Indian Almond Leaf?
@BetterBetta3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! A carbon filter does remove chemicals from the water, so the natural benefits of the almond leaf should be untouched. If you are using them purely for curing fin rot and are not seeing an improvement you could remove it temporarily, but I have never had an issue with my carbon filters and the effectiveness of my almond leaves. If you have them in all the time for a blackwater tank, then I definitely wouldn’t worry about the filter! ☺️

I don't know if you are responding to anyone at the moment but is it possible that these leaves can kill bettas? I've seen some reviews that they killed their betta.
@BetterBetta4 жыл бұрын
I’m still checking in every now and then! Hope you and your family are staying safe. I haven’t seen those reviews myself so can’t comment on them specifically, but I do know any drastic water changes can stress out a fish and make them sick/pass away. If they are added in large amounts at once, it is possible a fish may go into shock, but that’s just a theory. As for the leaves being toxic, the tannins are found in their own natural habitat so the actual properties of the leaves are definitely safe!
