INDIAN CLASSICAL DANCE ( MANIPURI )
Manipuri Dance is one of the oldest classical dances of India which originated from the tiny state of Manipur-a part of North East India . As the great Himalayas run eastward, it tempers down in size, takes a southward loop splits into blue hills and green valleys before it finally takes a plunge into the Bay of Bengal. Midway of the southward loop, washed with Barak basin on the west and the Chidwin river on the east, where lies Manipur nurturing an array of colourful culture.

CHALI PARENG performed by 13 Students on 26-12-2021 on Day 3 of 3 Days 49th Foundation Celebration -2021 of Harimati Dance & Music Centre, Imphal
Chali Pareng Jagoi is constituted as distinctive ethical & aesthetic and compulsory first step of learning Manipuri dance .
Khubak Eshei, Chali Pareng Jagoi and Chiodeb Chongba which are the parts of Rath-Yatra known as Kangchingba festival of Meitei Hindus in Manipur . As do observed Ratha Jatra in other parts of the country and aboard , the idols of Manipur are the replicas of the Lord Jagannatha, His brother Balarama and sister Subhadra of Puri, Orissa.
Both male and female, young, old and children participate in the Rath procession in Manipur’s Ratha Jatra . At every gate of the house people offer flowers and fruits and sweets to Shri Lord Jagannatha and His siblings wherever the procession goes. Every one enjoys this religious festival with a great zeal and glamours.
Every evening for the full period of either eight, nine or ten days whichever may be as indicated by the astrologer from year to year, there is three kinds sankirtana known as Khubak Eshei ( Clapping music) along with Chali Pareng Jagoi/Dance & Choideb (Jayadev) Chongba which followed by distribution of Khechri at the Mandap of the temple wherever the Rath Yatra procession has performed.
Chali Pareng Jagoi/Dance which performed during Ratha Jatra is extinguishing day by day in Manipur defying the originality & significance of these unique & rare art form associated with Ratha Jatra of Manipur.
We present this Chali pareng dance performed by 13 young girls of our Centre to promote , propagate and as an encouragement & giving a platform as well as exposure of this obliterated performing art form of Manipur.
This footage clip is also a part of ‘AZADI KA AMRIT MAHOTSAV’ of 75 years of India’s Independence & 50 Years of long cultural journey of our Centre-’GOLDEN JUBILEE’ celebration.
